Notre-Dame de Paris or the Notre-Dame Cathedral is known primarily thanks to the novel of Victor Hugo, who set himself the goal (and, by the way, quite successfully achieved it) to rekindle the French in love for the cathedral. In the existence of this love, there is no doubt - during the Great French Revolution, the Parisians were ready to pay bribes "for the needs of all the revolutions that will still occur in other countries" Robespierre, who threatened otherwise to demolish the cathedral.
Statues of chimeras at the Cathedral
Probably, it is Hugo who should be thanked for the opportunity and to this day to admire the cathedral. Under the reign of Louis XIV, one and a half hundred years before the writing of the novel, Notre Dame was seriously injured and lost all his stained glass. And the revolution did not pass for him without a trace - Robespierre, though he did not demolish it, but ordered to decapitate the statues decorating the cathedral. And only ten years after the publication of the novel, reconstruction began, in addition to the return of the original species, donated to Notre Dame and the famous gallery of chimeras.
The construction of the cathedral stretched for almost two centuries, which, incidentally, only benefited him. At the time of the foundation of the first stone in the French architecture, the Romanesque style dominated, in the process of construction it was replaced by a Gothic one. Thanks to this, Notre Dame absorbed the best of both, having received his own unique look.
It was assumed that the cathedral would be so great that it could accommodate all the inhabitants of Paris, who at that time were about ten thousand. The cathedral is so huge that it would be possible to place a twelve-storey house in the middle nave.
External and internal decoration of the cathedral
Another feature of the construction of the cathedral is that it does not have any internal walls. They are replaced by columns connected by arches, and the rooms are separated from each other by stained-glass windows.
It is believed that the cathedral holds one of the nails with which the cross for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was put together. On the other hand, the same is said about about thirty nails in different countries.

The romance stories are everywhere - Notre Dame de Paris. December 16, 2013

The amazing thing is how our views can change depending on the age or mood changes ... Notre Dame had never loved before, although she was admired with the musical, and Hugo read it and was in Paris several times. Love came suddenly. In the September visit we lived in the Latin Quarter - Notre Dame woke us in the mornings and did not notice the charm, his statues, the energy that came from the ancient structure - it was impossible. So it turned out that only by the fifth visit a miracle happened: I entered the interior of the cathedral ...) Read the whole review

Being in Paris, we also went the whole excursion group to the Notre Dame de Paris. Naturally, almost everyone heard about the cathedral, at least thanks to the famous musical. I was aware of the Gothic style of the cathedral, but its architecture impressed me. I could not meet the gloomy, gothic view of the cathedral and the fact that this is essentially a Catholic church, in which even the masses are now. (Very much it is far from the churches that are usual for me) Considering that ... Read the whole review

Well, who has not heard of the famous basilica of Notre Dame De Paris? It seems to me that there are no such people. Here we are, when visiting Paris, noted this place is mandatory for a visit. We walked along the Seine and saw Notre Dame from afar. It's gloomy and very gothic. Looking at him, it immediately becomes somehow eerie. We stood there very long for him and did not dare to go. Finally, gathering strength, we entered. Inside there was a pleasant organ music and there were a lot of tourists. Along the walls are different sculptures, beneath them ... Read the whole review

I have long dreamed of seeing this landmark. Particularly caught fire after reading the book by V. Hugo "Notre Dame Cathedral". Indeed, I have never seen such power! And do not even believe that it was all created by the hands of man! In front of the entrance to the cathedral there are stair-like rows of seats (in the photo to my left I can see), where you can just sit for hours and enjoy a beautiful view of this structure. The entrance to the Cathedral is free, photo and video shooting is allowed only without a flash. Inside the cathedral ... Read full review
