Entertainments, excursions and sights of Lyon
On Mount Fourviere in 43 BC, the Romans founded the Lugdunum camp - from here they preserved amphitheaters and aqueducts. Since the Middle Ages, behind this mountain, the second name of the "mountain that prays" was fixed, because of the representatives of religious communities who chose it. And the Croix-Russ mountain, which stands opposite, is a "mountain that works": in the past, silkworm masters lived and worked here.
Two Lyons rivers, Rhone and Sona merge, forming a peninsula - or "almost an island," Presqu'il . This area has remained the heart of the city for the past 2000 years, making Lyon a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
Lyon is also famous for its squares, there are more than 100 of them in the city. Of these, the most picturesque and beautiful is Bellecour ). The chestnut alleys and gardens flourish here, the monument of Louis XIV is sitting grandly on horseback
Another notable religious monument is the basilica of Notre-Dame-de- Fourier on tops e Fourviere Hill . Towering above Lyon, next to the metal tower Fourviere, this basilica was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary; and the crypt under it - in honor of St. Joseph . The temple was built at the end of the 19th century for private donations designed by the architect Pierre Bossan in a combination of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Gothic styles . Next to the basilica there is a chapel tower left from the medieval church, destroyed by the Huguenots in the 16th century . At its top in the 19th century a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary was installed .
Metal Tower Fourviere is another "highlight" of Lyon. Height of 85, 9 m and weight 210 tons, this tower is an exact copy of the third floor of the Eiffel Tower
