Out of 290 waterfalls (from 4, 5 meters), the highest and spectacular is the Lower Waterfall on the Yellowstone River, 94 meters high. Lake Yellowstone, one of the largest high-mountain lakes in North America, is in the center of the Yellowstone caldera. Caldera is the biggest dormant super volcano that has erupted with tremendous force several times in the past two million years. Not surprisingly, most of the park's territory is covered with frozen lava. One of the five existing geyser fields in the world is also located here.
In the park are found almost 60 species of mammals, including rare: wolf and grizzly bear (about 600 individuals) .There is an American bison, a black bear (baribal), a deer wapiti (about 30 thousand), elk, a black-tailed deer, a snow goat, a hornhorn and a thickhorn .Rare species include puma (25 individuals) and wolverine (quantity unknown) .In 2003, traces of the lynx were seen, but the lynx could not be seen since 1998 .And also: 18 species of fish (including yellowstone salmon), 6 species of reptiles (turtles and snakes), 4 species of amphibians and 311 species of birds (extremely rare American crane, bald eagle, white pelican and swan-trumpeter) .
The park has 1,770 km of marked trails and bicycle paths. Hunting and climbing are completely prohibited. Fishing is permitted after obtaining an appropriate license. In summer, you can also go boating, in winter - on flat skiing and snowmobiles.
