In the village of Ladvozero lies the ashes of the famous runestress Arkhippa Perttunen, from which the collector of the Karelo-Finnish epic Elias Lönnrot recorded a significant part of the "Kalevala."
In the northwest of the Kostomuksha region, by the decision of the Russian government, it is planned to create a national park "Kalevala" in order to preserve the virgin forests left in the area. The nature here is unique, there are corners where the human foot has not set foot.
To the south of the city, in the area of Kamennoye Lake, is the Kostomuksha Reserve. Pine forests, as well as plants, animals and birds, many of which are listed in the Red Book, are protected. Together with the Finnish nature reserve "Kuhmo" is included in the first Russian-Finnish ecological park "Friendship".
