London Theaters The Coliseum Theater has a very notable building - everyone notices it. A huge structure with a sphere fixed at the top looks unusual. There is nothing surprising in this - the building was built to surprise humanity, to create the world's largest theater-variety show. And its creator did it.
Theater "Litseum" in London
London, Str. Wellington, 21 The London Theater "Litseum" has remained popular for many years, despite the fact that it shows only one play, but rather a musical. Every day, for more than 15 years, the musical "The Lion King" has been performing at this theater, and every performance has been gathering the hall.
In London, accordingly, there are a lot of theaters, different in terms of the quality of the productions, repertoire and price. There are magnificent classical troupes with invited opera stars on leading roles, there are staging of modern drama (mostly, naturally, British), there are experimental theaters, and there are a lot of commercial theaters, in which Broadway (and not only) musicals are continually being performed. Some of them are just good, some are historical and very old, and some are completely unique.
The most famous
The most famous, serious and fundamental theater in Britain is, of course, the Royal Opera. This is one of those theaters that determine the face of the modern scene. The productions created by him are then staged by other theaters around the world, the leading roles are played by world-scale stars, there are simply no bad performances, connoisseurs from all over the world come to premieres. Also here works one of the best symphony orchestras in the world. This is something that is always great and interesting.
Theater Drury Lane now puts only musicals. The troupe is serious - for example, it was this theater that got the right to make a musical from The Lord of the Rings.
Another big theater is the Coliseum. A large troupe, an extensive program, is not worth counting on a staged masterpiece, but an unusual and interesting building is a masterpiece of the Art Deco era. And it's easy to buy tickets here.
Globus Theater is an invariable center of tourist attraction. The reconstructed theater of Shakespeare, the plays go the way the theater worked in his era. Put here, respectively, almost only Shakespearean plays. The British do not go here, but for the tourist - a good option: there is a pretty good Shakespearean troupe. Well, the reconstructed building is interesting to see - it is built according to old technologies.
But the British go to Old Vic. It is also a very old theater, it is non-profit and specializes in classics and modern British drama, there is a serious drama troupe. You should go here if you like good prose and do not like commercial theater.
Musicals and modern productions
Commercial theater is a separate article. Almost all such theaters put musicals, and in all of them at the same time there is only one performance (every day the same for years and decades). Almost all of them are concentrated in or around Covent Garden .... In Queen's Theater there is a famous musical "Les Misérables", in Her Majesty's Theater (the old one, by the way - more than 300 years old) - "The Phantom of the Opera", in Novello Theater - " Mamma of the mission! ", In the theater" Litseum "-" The Lion King ", etc.
In addition to entertaining theaters, Covent Garden has many theatrical theaters that stage modern plays. The main ones are Wyndham's Theater, Ambassadors Theater, Apollo Theater, Duchess Theater, Theater Royal Haymarket (he is also almost 300 years old) and the already mentioned Old Vic. There are serious plays here, there are comic, there are classics, quite a lot of Shakespearean plays. To visit these theaters you need to understand English, otherwise it will not be interesting.
Also in London there are all other kinds of theaters possible in principle: experimental, cabaret, amateur, informal, ethnic - whatever.
Royal Opera tickets can be bought only in advance, in other theaters - you can and right before the performance.
