The UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 426 is St. Peter's Cathedral Church in Westminster, or Westminster Abbey. A remarkable example of early English Gothic architecture, Westminster Abbey was laid more than a thousand years ago. Nowadays this is the main shrine of the British nation, its symbol.
On May 8, 1945, when the Second World War was officially announced, short prayers of thanks were held every hour in the cathedral, attended by about 25,000 people, beginning with the Lord Chancellor, ending with ordinary Britons.
