The clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London is known throughout the world as Big Ben. In the Palace of Westminster there are meetings of the House of Lords and the House of Commons, in many kilometers of the corridor of the palace it is easy to lose the right direction, there is hardly a person who visited all of its 1200 rooms, but the most famous part of the palace - the clock tower - is known, without exaggeration, the world and is one of the most striking architectural symbols of the city.
Interesting facts about Big Ben
The height of the tower is 96 meters, inside it is a narrow spiral staircase of 334 steps. Going through them all, you can get to a small open area, which is the famous bell Big Ben. It is he who beats every hour time, it is his sounds that are transmitted every hour on the BBC radio. It was this bell that gave the name to the clock and to the tower itself.
The bell is large: 2 meters in height and 3 meters in the base. No less striking are the dimensions of the clock: their diameter is 7 meters, and the arrows have a length of 2, 7 and 4, 2 meters.
The watch was launched on May 21, 1859 (the tower itself was built a year earlier) and is still on the list of the world's largest clock. Four of their dials are made of opal glass, edged with gilded frames and have a Latin inscription, which in translation means "God save our Queen Victoria." These watches also have a global significance: officially the new year on planet Earth begins with the first blow of Big Ben on January 1.
Interestingly, Londoners living near Westminster Palace on New Year's Eve hear thirteen beats of the Big Ben bell: the effect is due to the fact that the speed of sound is slower than the speed of propagation of radio waves.
Unfortunately, the general public does not have the opportunity to climb the tower of Big Ben: security considerations are above all. But from time to time, the press and various important guests of the UK get an opportunity to climb it. But even important guests are forced to overcome the steps of the stairs on their own: there are no lifts inside the tower.
The Big Ben clock tower systematically becomes the "heroine" of many films, embodying the image of London.

I came to London with my friend. The flight lasted 6 hours, so we did not even have time to look back, as we were in a real British city, and not just in the usual city, but in London itself! I managed to see the magnificent London last year. I did not have such a charge of emotions for a long time. From Moscow to London, I got on the plane, in just a couple of hours I was already in the capital of Great Britain, and could not believe that it was true, and not a dream! I visited London for the first time in May 2013. I dreamed of seeing Big Ben in my eyes, and now my dream has become a reality! Before London, my friend and I got on the plane, the first flight was the most memorable.
