Entertainment, excursions and attractions in Kanchanaburi

The military museum and bridge over the river Kwai, connecting the territories of two countries: Thailand and Myanmar, are popular. Little is known that during the Second World War this railway bridge was nicknamed the "road of death". Located in the north of the city, he became famous for the movie "Bridge over the River Kwai", shot by famous director David Lin in 1957. Today the bridge can be crossed on foot or by train to the waterfalls, expensive, about a hundred kilometers to the northwest. Express runs three times a day, makes regular stops at small local stations. The most popular local attraction is the Sai Yok Noi waterfall, located a few kilometers from the city, where the train makes a stop, during which you can take a boat trip up and down the river.

JEATH Military Museum (the abbreviation denotes the first letters of six countries that were involved in the construction of railroad tracks: Japan, England, Australia, Thailand and Holland), located in the south of Kanchanaburi, immediately after the temple of Chaitchumphon Wat. The building of the museum is an exact copy of bamboo barracks, which contained captured allies during the war. The exhibition presents drawings, photographs and newspaper articles of that period. Working hours: daily 8: 30-18: 00.

The Museum of World War II is south of the bridge. It contains materials and memorabilia: military shells, photographs, sketches, statues of important military commanders, remains of Asian workers found in a common grave. In a separate part of the building an exhibition is opened, composed of images and figures of the Buddha, Thai weapons of the Ayutthy period and portraits of the kings of Thailand. Working hours: 8: 00-18: 00.

The Amazing Kanchanaburi

No less interesting is the temple of Wat Mongkon Thong, located 5 km east of the city center. The main "highlight" of this temple is the "floating nun", who indulged in meditation while swimming in a small lake. From the caves above the temple, a magnificent panorama opens up.

National parks of Kanchanaburi

Erawan National Park, one of the most visited parks in the country, is 65 km from Kanchanaburi (on the way 1, 5 hours) and is famous for its beautiful seven-level waterfall, the upper tier of which resembles a three-headed elephant (the Thais are called Eravan). Several natural pools right under the waterfalls are suitable for swimming, so there are always a lot of tourists on the weekends. Deep 10 km into the park you can see Tham Prathat - a large cave with natural stalactites.

The Sinaharind National Park is north of Eravan and it is much more difficult to get to it. Here you can see: a seven-level waterfall Namtok Huai Mei Khami with an emerald shade of water. The easiest way to get here on a pleasure boat in two hours.

Kanchanaburi Safari Park, located near the village of Bo Phloy, is famous for its fine specimens of African and Asian mammals such as lions, tigers, bears, giraffes and zebras. Working hours: 9: 00-18: 00.

The historical park Prasat Mueyang Sing is located on the river Kwai, 43 km west of Kanchanaburi. Built in the late 12th century, it was the stronghold of the Khmer empire, occupying a strategically important location along both banks of the river. Park operating mode: 9: 00-16: 30.
