Traveling across Europe, heir to the throne, Pavel Petrovich was struck by the beauty and harmony of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome and the square in front of him surrounded by colonnades .In the year 1799 .already being the emperor Paul I wanted to see such a construction in his capital and announced a competition for the best project of the cathedral, which would replace the dilapidated Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (popularly known as Kazan), built in the 30's .XVIII at .One of the main relics of Russia was kept in the church - the miraculous icon of the Kazan Mother of God .The main condition of the contest was that the future church should have been similar to the shrine of the Eternal City that had come to its liking .Of all the works presented, the project of the young talented architect Andrei Nikiforovich Voronikhin was approved .Already after the murder of Paul I, August 27, 1801 .the solemn laying of the Kazan Cathedral took place in the presence of Emperor Alexander I .
The history of the Kazan Cathedral
The architect faced a difficult task .The construction of the new church was planned on the site near Nevsky Prospekt, stretched from west to east .At the Orthodox churches, the altar is always facing east, and the main facade with the entrance is to the west, thus the northern (lateral) facade of the future church turned to Nevsky Prospekt .Voronikhin found an elegant solution - the side facade was visually turned into the main facade, having attached to it a grandiose semicircular colonnade unfolding towards the main thoroughfare of the city .96 put in four rows of columns of steel also reminded of the columns closing the square in front of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome .
After the war of 1812, 27 trophy banners of the defeated French army were transferred to the church. And in subsequent years, they kept the keys to the fortresses and cities of Europe and the banners that the Russian army obtained as a result of the campaigns of 1813-1814. The famous Field Marshal Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov is buried near the wall of the Kazan Cathedral. And on the main square there are bronze monuments to the great generals MI Kutuzov and MB Barclay de Tolly.

The most convenient location in the very center of the city and magnificent architecture together with the special spirit of the place made this cathedral our favorite in St. Petersburg. The easiest way is to get there by metro - the exit to the station "Griboedova Canal". Well, it is simply impossible to get lost there - right and left Nevsky Prospekt, on the right is Zinger's House (the Book House), Mikhail Mikhailovsky Palace with the Russian Museum, and right across the intersection - Kazan Cathedral. The entrance to it, unlike the Savior on the Blood, ... Read the whole review

Traveling to St. Petersburg is a dream for many people, not only in Russia, but also abroad, so it is not surprising that trains and planes with hundreds of tourists arrive daily. First of all, it is worth to get acquainted with the list of the main places of St. Petersburg and immediately begin acquaintance with them, because if your tour lasts only 10 days, then during this time you hardly have time to visit all the interesting places, palaces and parks of the city. It is best to come to Peter for at least 2 weeks, plus a few days to dedicate ... Read the whole review

Kazan Cathedral from the entrance makes an indelible impression. A special atmosphere, the turn of pilgrims to the icon of Kazan Mother of God, which never runs out, a memorial plaque over the burial of Kutuzov with coats of arms and keys from the cities that conquered the Russian army under his leadership. It is a pity that you can not take pictures inside the cathedral - I was made a note after the first shot - the cathedral is functioning, and you can not shoot people who in any case get in the frame, during the service ... The Kazan Cathedral is the first attraction I visited when I arrived in St. Petersburg. The fact is that I did not use public transport and taxis, it's absolutely not necessary. All the main attractions are in the center along the main avenue, which begins for visitors from the station. Walking along the avenue, you can see all the most wonderful and Kazan Cathedral was the first one on my way. Kazan Cathedral is truly an amazing architectural monument of the 19th century, executed in a very unusual form ... Read full review
