The Tretyakov Gallery is the most famous art museum in the capital, founded by merchant Pavel Tretyakov in 1856. Today it is a large state cultural institution, which includes several museums, the main one of which is the museum complex in Lavrushinsky Lane.
History
The main building of the gallery is the house No. 10 in Lavrushinsky Lane owned by the Tretyakov family .Maecenas and entrepreneur Pavel Tretyakov conceived his gallery as a national meeting, that is, consisting exclusively of works of Russian artists and artists who made a significant contribution to Russian art .In 1856 he acquired the first paintings, and in 1892 g .handed Moscow his art collection consisting of 1287 pictorial and 518 graphic works of the Russian school, 75 paintings and 8 drawings of the European school, 15 sculptures and icons collection .Amazing flair and impeccable taste of Tretyakov have become a guarantee that his acquired painting to this day is the gold fund not only of the gallery, but of all Russian art .
In the rooms of the apartment house to place all this wealth there was no possibility, therefore the house gradually overgrew the annexes, and in 1902-1904. the building had a famous facade, made according to the sketches of the artist Vasnetsov, who later became the emblem of the Tretyakov Gallery. Later, the residential part of the house was also converted into the halls of the gallery. Due to the lack of space for the expanding collection, the art of the 20th century was moved to the building on the Crimean shaft, and in the historical building left work from the earliest times until the beginning of the 1910s.
The current collection of the Tretyakov Gallery has more than 100 thousand works, temporary exhibitions are held. The gallery hosts excursions, there are also children's creative studios.
