The village of Borki is famous for the only architectural building in the region that was built in the style of medieval Romanesque architecture. But the monument comes to look not so much because of the desire to enjoy the subtleties of architecture, but rather because of curiosity: not every village has a palace, and not just some provincial landowner, but Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich Romanov.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a member (Prince Andrew Vladimirovich was cousin Nicholas II) in the present Lipetsk region owned more than five thousand hectares of land

The palace was built in the village of Borki by the project of Alexander von Gauguin, an architect from St. Petersburg, in 1902-1903 , and the whole estate complex was formed here until the events of 1917 . The material for the manor buildings was rubble stone and moraine sandstone, which, despite years and negative influences, could preserve the attractive appearance of the buildings . The main one resembles a medieval a castle with towers and loopholes, although in size the palace is inferior to its famous European prototypes . There was an English-type park adjacent to the buildings, which ended in a cascade of ponds . In addition, the estate complex included a dining room, om for servants, stables and courtyard with entrance gates . True, later they were laid with a stone, but in the facade of the castle you can see the place where they were .

Borkovskie legends

It is clear that none, especially a neglected castle or palace, can not stand idle and do not disturb the minds of the inhabitants of the surrounding settlements and visitors with their legends. The palace in Borki is not an exception in this regard.

In the tract behind the palace "an unusual composition from a stone table and chairs", which the locals call "the devil's dining room" and about which horrible stories are told, "hid".
Really, smaller The stones resemble a sofa and chairs set around a massive stone table. Huge boulders can be found further along the tract: according to legend, this devil scattered his "furniture."

Palace-hotel

Former possession of Prince Romanov was in desolation since 1999 . In the interval between revolution and nationalization and the collapse of the USSR, the estate managed to visit both the children's home, the school of peasant youth, and the ordinary secondary school . Several years ago the complex, incidentally, belonging to the monuments of history and culture and protected by the state, was sold to an individual . According to the agreement, the palace there must be without any violation of its integrity and style, and the relevant work is being carried out there now . After their completion, the hotel will have a hotel and entertainment complex: in this the palace constructed according to the European canons has not fallen behind its prototypes, many of which suffered the same fate .
