A bit from the history
At the site of the present city there was an ancient settlement of Komi called Pyras. The town of Kotlas was formed from several villages that appeared after the arrival of Russian settlers. The revival of the city's economy was due to the construction of the Perm-Kotlas railway at the end of the 19th century, which transformed Kotlas into an important trans-shipment point. Here on the river vessels the furs, timber, oil and other goods brought by rail were overloaded
In the 20s-50s of the last century Kotlas served as a transit point for those arrested or deported for political reasons. In 1938, the building of the GULAG administration was even built here.
