Tikhvin is the largest and one of the oldest cities in the Leningrad Region.
Already in the 16th century the Tikhvin Great Bogoroditsky Assumption Monastery was erected on this site, around which later the city itself was formed. Since then, he remembers both the times of incredible wealth and prosperity, and the complete post-war devastation, at one time he was badly damaged by a major fire, but nevertheless he managed to preserve his history, ancient architecture and his own look, which was formed throughout more than six hundred years.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Tikhvin
It is noteworthy that today Tikhvin has a clear division into the old and new part of the city, this has contributed to the fact that modern residential areas with typical panel high-rise buildings in no way violated the harmonious architectural plan of the old Tikhvin, which was developed back in the 18th century. @
It should be remembered that Tikhvin was always a rich city, which was located at the intersection of important trade routes, trade and handicrafts were the main occupations of local residents, which were enriched at a rapid pace .And already in the 17th century they lived many times better than even in large Russian cities, they often visited Europe and sought to build and decorate their homes in the best traditions, which could not but affect the architectural appearance of the city .Which, by the way, became at that time one of the largest trade and industrial centers in the region .
Due to the fact that in the 19th century Tikhvinka became navigable, seven locks were erected around the city, fragments of which have survived to this day and are one of the most interesting Tikhvin sights.
It is also interesting to walk through the streets of the historic center, where, along with the surviving wooden buildings, the restored Gostiny Dvor and colorful shopping arcades flaunt. Also in the city there is a memorial museum of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, located in the house where the famous composer lived.

Great Bogoroditsky Assumption Monastery
Naturally, the main city attraction is the monastery with the ancient Assumption Cathedral attached to it. According to historical documents, this cathedral was laid as early as the 16th century by order of the Moscow Tsar Vasily Ivanovich, the father of the legendary Ivan the Terrible.
This time has become one of the most favorable in the history of the monastery. So here comes the original building of the refectory, the main building of which was built in the likeness of the "Pomegranate Chamber", which is in the Moscow Kremlin. The Intercession Church and the Gate Church of the Ascension were also erected, housed in the new Holy Gates.
In the 17th century the monastery was supplemented with state cells, and most importantly an unusually beautiful belfry .A century later, this belfry was destroyed by fire and underwent a major reconstruction, during which its architectural appearance became even more sophisticated due to the unique hipped steeples .Thus, the architectural ensemble of the monastery acquired its modern appearance and in many ways became a model of the architecture of that time .It should be noted that today the monastery is surrounded not by the walls that were erected on the orders of Ivan the Terrible, but their copy, recreated in the 18th century .
In those days, the Great Bogoroditsky Assumption Monastery was the largest religious and secular center of a fairly rich shopping Tikhvin, even from the surrounding area, huge donations were made here. Thanks to which the monastery today amazes with magnificent interior decoration and external monumentality, it was possible to preserve ancient and very valuable icons and frescos, which are no longer one hundred years old.
At the end of the 18th century, the Empress Catherine the Great carried out a large-scale church reform, as a result of which the monastery was abolished, and its lands passed into the possession of wealthy noble families. But the city continued to live its life, increasing material well-being.
Events and holidays
Tikhvin is also famous for its cultural events. For many years now the festival of children's creativity "Tikhvinsky Lel", jazz festival "September in Tikhvin", various religious holidays, concerts of sacred music, Christmas fairs and much more have been held here for many years.
