A bit of history

All the time of the city's existence the Jews made up a significant part of its population, from the 18th century. By the end of the 19th century, Jewish bankers, moneylenders, jewelers, merchants pushed Greeks and Turks out of these spheres of activity.

It was in Iasi that the first theater was created, the performances in which went exclusively in Yiddish and which laid the foundation for a professional Jewish theater.

More than once the city became a place of dramatic events, the cause of which were interethnic problems. Particularly rich in such events were the years of the Second World War, when many citizens of Jewish nationality were destroyed or deported. Most of the survivors did not return to the city, preferring to emigrate to Israel.

Churches in Yassy

It is said that the Iasi lie on seven hills, like the eternal city of Rome. Each hill is crowned with a church, from the belltower of which opens a unique - in a literal sense - a view. The churches themselves are a wonderful architectural adornment of the city. The main attraction of Iasi is the Church of the Three Saints. An unusually beautiful architectural solution is complemented by no less remarkable interior decoration, and the ornament, carved from the stone under the dome of the church, is unique.

The museum collection of this temple contains many interesting and sometimes unexpected exhibits. So, it is here that you can see the printing house, created in 1640, it can still perform its functions.

The Metropolitan Church (19th century) is interesting not only as a historical and architectural monument, it is called the "mother of all Romanian churches". The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (15th century) was the place of anointing of Moldovan rulers. There are more than fifty churches in Iasi, each of which has its own image, its history.

Other attractions

The city itself is very diverse: old solid houses, typical for the European buildings of the 19th century, modern glass and concrete constructions, ancient churches, numerous boulevards adjoin here. In Iasi there are well-known ancient Roman monasteries in Romania, which have important sacred places for the Romanian people: St. Spiridon, St. Sava, Berba, Golia, Arges. The symbol of the city is a palace with a tower, equipped with bells. Their chimes are broadcast over the city every hour.
