The history of Yokohama

In the 19th century, following the collapse of Sakoka's policy (Japan's self-isolation from the outside world), Yokohama became the country's first port open to foreign trade .In 1865, Yokohama produced the first ice cream in Japan and beer .In 1870 the first daily newspaper appeared in Japan, in 1872 - gas lamps .In Yokohama the first train line in Japan opens, connecting the city with Tokyo .In the same year, Jules Verne includes Yokohama, in which he never visited, in one of the episodes of his then popular book "Around the World in Eighty Days," describing him as a rapidly developing, western-oriented Japanese city .However, as a result of the severe destruction caused by the Great Kanto earthquake and the Second World War bombing, Yokohama has still not been able to restore its former outstanding position .

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Yokohama

One of the largest business centers of Greater Tokyo is the futuristic Minato-Miray-21, or Yokohama Port of the Future, symbolized by the Landmark Tower (296 m), or the "Landmark Tower" - the tallest building in Yokohama and the third tallest in Japan .At the top of the tower, from where you can see a stunning view of the city, you can climb the elevators, they say, the fastest in Japan .Immediately, in Minato-Miray-21, there is a Ferris wheel (at the time of its construction in 1989, the highest in the world), concurrently performing the functions of the clock, now the world's largest .

In the Sin-Yokohama area, some distance from the Port of the Future, there is the Yokohama Arena stadium with a capacity of up to 17,000 people, the Ramen Museum and the Nissan Stadium, also known as the Yokohama International Stadium, one of the World Championship arenas on football in 2002.

Chinatown of Yokohama, whose history is about 150 years, is the largest in Japan and one of the largest in the world. Located between Yamashita Park and Ishikavatyo Street, the quarter grew around the Chinese temple of Cantabieu, built in 1887.

Not far from the Chinatown is the Yokohama Stadium, the Silk Center with an exposition of the Silk Museum, dedicated to all stages of its production and processing - from silkworm breeding to manual painting of fabrics for expensive kimonos; and a museum of dolls with more than a thousand toys from around the world.

Ramen Museum

The Ramen Museum, opened in 1994 in Yokohama, dedicated to the "omnipresent" Chinese noodles, is more than just a museum - it is both a theme park and a hypermall .The first floor of the museum is devoted to numerous exhibits; Here is also a souvenir shop .The rest of the museum, located on two underground levels, is a miniature historical park .So, in the courtyard of 1958, and in a noisy working quarter filled with tiny shops, houses and restaurants, the work boils - sellers sell sweet cotton and cakes, "old-fashioned" bars offer sake .But, perhaps, the main attraction of the park are eight restaurants, each of which specializes in its own unique sort of noodles .The museum is open daily from 11:00 to 23:00, the entrance fee is 300/100 yen per adult / child, food and drinks are sold separately .

Yokohama Parks

In Yokohama there are beautiful parks - a landscaped park and open-air museum Sankaien, Yamashita Park and the Minato-no-mieru-oka-koen park with a beautiful view of the bay.

Sankayen is a landscape park and an open-air museum, in which samples of traditional wooden structures, temples and houses are collected from all over the country. The park area of 175 thousand square meters. m, created under the project of Tomitaro Jara, known under the pseudonym Sankey Hara, was opened in 1906.

The pearl of the Yamashita Park, opened in 1923, is the passenger liner "Hikawa-maru", known as the "Queen of the Pacific". In 1961, the liner was opened as a museum dedicated to the history of the Japanese fleet. In 2006 the museum was closed. And the fate of the liner is unknown. However, after the restoration of the liner launched by Japan's largest shipping company Nippon-Yusen in 2007, on the day of its 78th anniversary, Hikawa-Maru was reopened to the public.

Amusement parks

Other attractions of Yokohama include the Hakkeijima Sea Entertainment Center with Japan's largest aquarium located on an artificial island, as well as amusement parks Joypolis and Yokohama Dreamland. Of great interest is the so-called theater street Yzedzaki-Cho - the largest and most famous commercial and entertainment quarter of the city with a variety of restaurants, nightclubs, cafes, discos and theaters.
