The homeland of exquisite ceramic products, quiet mountain villages and vibrant megacities - Western Honshu, however, is more famous in connection with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima .But this sad heritage is by no means everything that Honshu can offer to the tourist - in Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures there are charming coastal areas: Kurashiki with its excellent museums and Bidzen, famous for its pottery craftsmen and weapons blacksmiths .Yamaguchi prefecture is famous for limestone caves, and Shimonoseki is delighted with fresh seafood, especially poisonous fugu fish, which in Japan is considered a delicacy .
Central Honshu, stretched between Kanto (Greater Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe), the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, is dotted with shopping centers and traditional Japanese towns.
Lively Nagoya, the fourth largest city in Japan, is the industrial center of the country with its characteristic executive and energetic spirit. Kanazawa lures beautiful streets, where once lived samurai and geisha. Beautiful Takayama attracts delicious cuisine, and the mountain villages of Shirakawa and Gokayama are traditional Japanese houses inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It's sad that Northern Honshu is less visited by tourists, although ideal conditions for traveling here are rocky mountains, deep valleys and bubbling rivers, sleeping volcanoes and hot springs.
The largest cities are Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima.

How to get here
The Shinkanses trains following along the coast of the Inland Sea of Japan from east to west are the fastest way to travel in West Honshu. Between the coasts of the Inland Sea and the Sea of Japan, it is faster to travel by bus, but, unfortunately, most of the services are not covered by the "Jayar" pass (Japanese Railways).
Prior to Kyushu and Central Honshu, the fastest way to get there is by car along the Tugoku motorway, which crosses the whole of Western Honshu; and to Northern Honshu - along the line Tohoku-shinkansen, connecting Tokyo with Morioka (travel time 2 h 30 min). Then the Tohoku-shinkansen line continues to Hachinohe, from where several local trains follow to Aomori and further north to Hokkaido.
Travelers from Russia can come to Central Honshu by sea. Ferries are organized by the company FKK Air Service and run between Fusiki and Vladivostok. Ferries from Vladivostok depart every Monday at 18:00 and arrive in Fusiki 39 hours later. From Japan ferries depart on Fridays at 18:00 and arrive in Russia on Sunday mornings.

The region of Tyugoku is home to three sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Silver Lions by Iwami Ginzan; the Dome of Gembaka (or the dome of the Atomic Explosion) and the Itukushima Shrine, one of the most revered Shinto shrines.
Only twelve authentic castles were preserved in Japan, and in the Tyugoku region there are two of them: the highest castle of Japan, Bittu-Matsuyama and one of the few black castles in Japan, Matsue Castle. And in Tugoku there are three famous Japanese parks - Koraku-en in Okayama, Kenroku-en in Kanazawa and Koraku-en in Mito.
In the Oka Hida area in Takayama, it is worth paying attention to traditional Japanese houses "Gasso-zukuri" with a roof in the form of hands folded in prayer. In Nagano, see the Buddhist monastery of Zenkodzi, which is considered the national treasure of the country.
In Tokyo, you should visit the Imperial Palace of Kokyo, the temple of Toseg, the Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of Nicola-do, the Tokyo National Museum, the new museum of the history of Edo-Tokyo, the National Museum of Science in Ueno Park, the Historical Museum of Sitamashi, the Goddess Kannon Temple, the National Theater of Japan with representations of troupes "Kabuki", "No" and "Bunraku". Well, the most recognizable landscape of Central Honshu is, of course, the conical outline of Fujiyama.
Unsurpassed Kansai attracts tourists with its "treasures" and five UNESCO World Heritage sites: Kyoto and Nara, the ancient capitals of Japan, are full of temples and historical sites, and Himeji is famous for its magnificent castle.
