Probably, it is difficult to meet a person whom the magnificent Gothic building of the Milan Cathedral would leave indifferent. The cathedral of the Virgin Mary Nashente (or simply the Duomo) is the largest in the world, it can accommodate up to forty thousand people at the same time, besides, it has no equal in beauty of exterior and interior decoration.
A little history
Duomo (in the translation from the Italian - the cathedral) was built at the dawn of the 14th century, and grandiose construction was completed only in 1813. But the project of its erection did not change, so the building is so harmonious. It is the best example of a Gothic style that can not be surpassed.
History
Duomo Architecture
In the exterior of the cathedral, absolutely everything is struck - more than a hundred spiers, the main one of which is crowned with the figure of Madonna, the heavenly patroness of Milan, compositions on marble walls, illustrating biblical stories, scenes from the life of saints, and also there are images of angels and even fantastic unseen animals. The beauty and grandeur of these creations simply can not be expressed in words.
Interiors of the cathedral
But even more impressive is the Duomo with its interior decoration. Once inside the cathedral, you lose the sense of reality, it seems, there can not be ceilings and arches so high, columns - so elegant and powerful at the same time, and the walls - so skilfully decorated. Particular attention is paid to the extraordinary beauty of the stained glass windows, they create a special atmosphere of solemnity and at the same time mystery. It's amazing, but the oldest one is more than five centuries old. . Also inside the cathedral it is impossible not to notice the figure of St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of all fishermen who died martyrdom - he was skinned alive . Sculptor Marco d'Agrate was able to achieve the maximum anatomical similarities in their work, and this sculpture looks simply unrealistic believable . It's also interesting to look at the tombstones of saints decorated with wooden slabs, on which paintings from the life of St. Ambrose . are carved, the names of all the archives Milan from the first century, carved into stone, or listen to one of the best organs in the world
In conclusion it is worth to climb to the roof of the cathedral (it can be done both on an ancient staircase and by means of an elevator), the view from there the cathedral is open every day from 9:00 to 18:00 with a break from 12:00 to 14:30, admission is free

Roof of the Duomo - a fairy-tale world in the center of Milan 04 June 2014
We went upstairs simply out of curiosity, to see what was there and how close. You can go up on foot, but we were tired, or you can climb the elevator, it's easier. Tickets for the roof are sold at the ticket offices right from the central entrance. For an adult, the price is 12 euros, the child 6 euros.
The roof of the cathedral consists of ... Read the whole review

Beautiful Duomo October 09, 2013
The building of the cathedral is unusually huge, next to it you can feel yourself a speck of dust. Photos of the cathedral and the cathedral are alive - these are completely different things. There are a lot of tourists near the Duomo, as there are many scammers who allegedly give you pigeons feed, take pictures of you to your camera, ... Read the whole review
