The heart of the Vatican and the entire Catholic world, St. Peter's Cathedral is one of the main attractions of Rome. Here you can view ancient Rome from a bird's-eye view, admire the interior of the cathedral with the domes of the dome, defend the mass and even receive the blessing of the pontiff.

St. Peter's Cathedral - is, without exaggeration, the very story, embodied in stone .The list of great people, who in one way or another put their hand to his architecture and interior decoration, will take more than one page, and the fates of the world, nations and nations have been made within his walls .The history of the cathedral began in the 4th century with the erection of a modest basilica over the alleged grave of the apostle Peter .Until the 15th century the building did not stand out for anything special .And in 1506 the papal order decided to rebuild the basilica in a grand cathedral, the center of Catholicism and the symbol of power of the pontiff .

Interiors and facades

Today St. Peter's Cathedral rises 136 m; the length of its central passage is 211 m. Inside, the largest cathedrals of Europe can easily fit (special marks mark their dimensions on the floor). The facade and interior are richly decorated with numerous statues of Christ, John the Baptist and the Apostles, gravestones and monuments to statesmen, including the grave of Pope John Paul II. Among the masterpieces - the marble "Pieta" by Michelangelo.

Cost of visiting

To enjoy a breathtaking view of the interior of the cathedral (and admire the surrounding landscapes), you can climb to the top of the dome. The cost is 7 EUR with all conveniences on the elevator and 5 EUR - without amenities, walking on the stairs (more than 500). Note that the last section of the steps will have to be overcome by its own motion (the width of the passage is about 50 cm, and you need to turn your shoulders slightly - entertainment is not for fearful heights). For ascent and descent, take 1 hour.

In Italy we went to Catholic Easter. One of the main excursions was the visit to St. Peter's Basilica. When we reached St. Peter's Square, where the cathedral is located, the pope of Rome, who ruled Mass, was seen from the window. This cathedral is the largest in the whole world, and places 60 thousand people. We can not drive up to the cathedral itself, so we left our bus a little further, and walked to the square. There are a lot of people here, all are photographed. The entrance to the Cathedral itself is free for all. You can ... Read the whole review

St. Peter's Cathedral - a visiting card of Rome, Italy and the Vatican. And, of course, a significant place for Catholics around the world. This current temple is, undoubtedly, a masterpiece of architecture. From the square he looks majestic, and inside he admires with his decor. To go on it on a tour is better with a guide, and for independent travelers I advise you to read more about what is in it. Otherwise, you can pass by something meaningful, because there is so much to look at. For example, ... Read the whole review

St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome is the heart of the Catholic world, thousands of tourists from all over the world come here daily to see this beautiful creature. The dome of the cathedral is visible from many points of the city. Anyone can climb it, but you need to take into account that you have to climb the steps on foot (that's why we did not climb it - our feet were already ill by the evening), although it is possible to do some part of the way on an elevator, all the same on foot ....
