Siena - the center of the province of Tuscany - is located 70 km south of Florence, which since ancient times has competed as the most cultural, charming, scientific or commercial center. That in turn stimulated the development of both cities. Siena is one of the few places in Tuscany that has preserved the spirit and atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Throughout the centuries, the Siens have carefully preserved the gothic image of their city, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries.
The Roman city of Seine-Julia (Latin Saena Julia) was founded on this site by Emperor Augustus. The first written mention of the city is dated to 70 AD. e.
