Parma (Italian Parma) is the administrative center of the Italian province of Emilia-Romagna, located north-west of Bologna.
Rich due to its food industry, Parma is an ideal image of a provincial wealthy city. Well-dressed locals can be seen riding bicycles through city streets or vacationers in elegant cafes. Well-kept monuments adorn the picturesque cobblestone streets. Luxurious architecture distracts from the temptation of delicious Parma dishes.
Parma is divided into two parts by the same river. The Etruscan name of the city was adapted by the Romans to describe the round shield of the "Parma".

A bit of history
Originally originally Etruscan, Parma became more significant as a Roman colony on the Via Emilia road. After the fall of Rome, the city was occupied by militant Goths, then Lombards and, finally, Franks.
In the 11th century Parma, together with the Holy Roman Empire, fought against the papacy. In subsequent centuries, the city passed one after another to the Visconti family, then Sforza, then to the French, and - sweet revenge - Parma fell under the papal rule.
The Farnese family, under the aegis of the papacy, ruled Parma from 1545 to 1731, later the Bourbons took power over it, proclaiming the time of peace and fanatical cultural activity. During Napoleon's invasions into northern Italy in the early 18th century, a period of instability began in Parma, which ended only with the unification of Italy. Sixty years later, barricades grew in the city, because Parma was the only place opposed to the infamous march to Rome by the adherents of Mussolini in 1922.

Cuisine and restaurants of Parma
If you are in Parma, then your journey is not over yet, until you try at least a piece of the same cheese - Parmigiano Reggiano. Known around the world, cheese owes its quality to its ingredients. Cows that give milk are grazed only in pastures around the city. Cheese is made and "ripens" for 18-30 months.
Another thing you should try in Parma is the local ham of prosciutto di Parma. Meat is prepared and aged at a special temperature and humidity for 10 months. As a result, a salty-sweet piece of meat is obtained, which can be eaten separately or as part of other local dishes.
Once we talked about meat, Coulatello is the king among them. Unfortunately, the state regulation of the production of the kulatello led him to almost complete extinction. True, there are still rogue manufacturers who cook meat in their basements. Coulatello differs from prosciutto in that it is made from fillet cut from ham, as opposed to a whole piece (prosciutto). If you managed to get a little ham of the coupler, try it! Since it is almost impossible to get it, and if possible, it costs about 40 EUR per pound.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Parma
Particularly interesting and well equipped is the Glauco Lombardi Museum, which tells the story of the second wife of Napoleon Maria-Louise, the Duchess of Parma. The museum has a little personal character and attracts many items and things of the talented and educated empress.
It is worth going to the Piazza Duomo, where the Cathedral and the Baptistery are located, built in the late 12th century. The Baptistery was designed by Benedetto Antelami and built of pink marble "Verona Rose". Marble changes color depending on how the sun shines on it. This is one of the most recognized medieval buildings in Italy. The frescoes inside the building are very exciting, as are the relief sculptures carved on the stone walls.
Parma University was founded one of the first in Italy. In its current form, the oldest educational institution exists since 1601. In addition, the Parma Botanical Garden, founded in 1770, is very popular.
In Palazzo della Pilotta, built in 1583, you can visit the Academy of Fine Arts, where the works of artists from the Parma school are exhibited, as well as the Archaeological Museum, the National Gallery, the Farnese Theater and the Bodoni Museum.
The palace of the Duke, erected in 1561 for Duke Ottavio Farnese in the former castle of Sforza, was expanded in the 17-18 centuries. Here is the Palazzo Eucherio Sanvitale with interesting 16th-century scenery and Parmigianino frescoes.
Also worth a visit is the Palazzo del Comune in 1627, Palazzo del Governatore of the 13th century, the Bishop's Palace of 1055 and the Old Hospital (Ospedale Vecchio), built in 1250 and reconstructed during the Renaissance. The latter now houses the State Archives and the Public Library.
