Entertainment, excursions and attractions Tartu
Tartu Old Town is full of cozy cafes, authentic shops and a variety of attractions . The central place among the latter is the Town Hall Square in the style of early classicism and the Town Hall located there (1767) . For centuries, this place was the center of the city, the main shopping area connecting the ancient settlement on Toome hill and river port . In the Middle Ages there appeared the Town Hall building, which until now has not survived . Modern Town Hall - already the third on this place .In addition to the architectural ensemble, the area attracts attention with an abundance of entertainment: it is here that festive events are held, tourists are resting, local visits are arranged .
The second most popular place in the city is the Toomemyagi hill (in Toome park ) and the ruins of the Dome Cathedral of Peter and Paul (13-15th century) . The majestic Gothic cathedral is crowned by an ancient settlement - the place of the foundation of Tartu . It is believed that this temple was the largest in the entire Baltic, but during the Reformation and the Livonian War 16 century he was comprehended sad fate - it was badly damaged . Altar part was later rebuilt under the university library, later - opened Museum of History . Right now in the park today they like to have picnics, stroll with children and just enjoy nice days .
The Church of St. John (Jaan) of the 14th century is another medieval monument of Tartu architecture, considered to be the most valuable among the rich heritage of Estonia. Not least thanks to the amazing elegant design of the temple: outside and inside the church is decorated with numerous decorative details of terracotta - baked clay. Initially, there were more than 1,000 such elements, and much less remained to ours.
The building of the University of Tartu is an important architectural dominant around which the city was built. It dates back to 1630, when the first gymnasium was opened in Tartu (then - Dorpat), which soon became a university. Finally, various cognitive museums of the city, the building of the Old Anatomicum (1803-1805) and the observatory attract attention.
