Abu Simbel is a village 280 km south of Aswan and only 40 km from the border with Sudan. This very small settlement with an exceptionally low number of attractions per square kilometer attracts thousands of tourists a year with just two temples in one rock ... but what a rock! That it had to be rescued in the 1960s, the Egyptian authorities in cooperation with UNESCO by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, sweeping everything in its path because of the construction of the Aswan Dam.
From 1964 to 1968, the temples of Ramses II at Abu Simbel is literally cut into pieces: on blocks weighing up to 30 tons, then transferred to a new place and collected again - that's mega-lego. The new location of the temples is 65 meters higher and 200 meters further from the river.
