The flag of Switzerland is a square banner of red with a white cross in the middle. All parts of the cross are equal, it seems to consist of 5 white squares: four of them are located vertically, horizontally, right and left, and one is in the middle.

This kind of flag was finally approved as a national symbol on December 12, 1889. Before that, one of the main state attributes has been modified several times, although its main colors remained unchanged from about the 13th to the 14th centuries.

The Swiss flag is very similar to the well-known flag of the "Red Cross". On it, exactly the same central element of red color is placed on a white background. This similarity is due to the founder of the organization, the Swiss Jean Henri Dunant.

Experts interpret the meaning of the flag of the state in different ways. Some consider him a reminder of the struggle of Christian soldiers for the freedom of their country. This is also evidenced by a red color symbolizing courage and courage in heraldry. Others interpret the cross as a sign of Switzerland's eternal neutrality
