Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Kandy
On the shore of the lake is the Dalada-Maligawa - the Temple of the Holy Tooth of the Buddha. It is believed that the Tooth appeared on the island in 311 g in the hair of Princess Hemamaly. The state capital was the city where the Tooth of the Buddha was located. When Zub arrived in Kandy in 1590, King Vilamaladarmasuriy I built a two-storeyed temple in the royal palace, where a relic was placed.
The Tooth of the Buddha Temple is part of a huge complex of buildings: to the north of the temple was the Royal Palace, the Queen's Palace, the Auditorium Hall. To the east of the temple on the border with the lake is the bathhouse of Queen Ulpe Ge, converted into the library by the British (and now the police station).
Near Dalad-Maligawa there are three Hindu temples dedicated to the gods Nat, Pattini (the goddess of chastity and health, popular among Buddhists) and Vishnu. Just a block from here is Kataragama-Devala - one of the most popular Hindu temples of the city, dedicated to the god of war Skanda. Another prominent landmark of the city, the so-called Royal Pavilion at the foot of the mountains, built by the English governor in 1834. Currently, the pavilion is the official residence of the President of Sri Lanka in Kandy.
Since Kandy is the religious capital and the center of Buddhism of the country, there are two main monasteries of the country: Asgiriya and Malvatte.
Trekking
Trekking is the best way to see the true nature and culture of Kandy. In the vicinity of the city there are many interesting routes, for example, to the temple of Asgiri Maha Viharaya and the hill Bahirawakande. And also: a track to the Udawattakelle nature reserve, the Lankathilake temple, the Portuguese War, Mount Alagalle, tea plantations and traditional villages.
In the east of Kandy is worth visiting the temples of Gangaramaya, Galmaduwa and Degaldoruwa. And there are many other places: Ash and Nitre caves, Rathna waterfall, Sitakotuwa limestone cave, rice fields, Rantambe reserve and many other places. Photo by Kandy (13)
