Anuradhapura is the administrative center of North-Central Province of Sri Lanka and one of the most ancient cities of the island of Ceylon. For a long time, Anaradhapura, located in a strategically important location - at the intersection of two port zones - and hidden in the depths of the jungle, was the capital of the state - until 1017, when the city was seriously destroyed by invaders from South India and abandoned by residents.

Almost a thousand years the city stood in desolation, and only in the 19th century the English hunter accidentally stumbled upon it in the jungle.

Today, Anuradhapura is mainly restored and divided into two parts: the Old Town, which is a non-residential security zone, and the New Town, where the entire population of Anuradhapura is living (about 50,000 people) and there is a tourist area with hotels, restaurants and shops.

The city is located quite far from the coastline, therefore tourists in Anuradhapura are attracted primarily world-famous monuments of culture and history of Sri Lanka, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
