8 years since 1668 the monastery was under siege for the fact that the church reform of Patriarch Nikon I judged as heresy. The fortress was taken because of the treachery of one monk, the rebels were killed. In different centuries Swedes and Englishmen attacked the monastery, but without success.

From 16 to the beginning of the 20th century the monastery served as a political and ecclesiastical prison. The chambers here were in the form of a truncated cone about 3 m in length, 2 m in width and 2 m in height, and 1 m in the narrow end. After official closure of the prison, the guilty priests continued to be sent here.

In the Soviet era, the monastery was liquidated and, in its place, forced labor camp. Monastic life here resumed only in 1990.

Pilgrimage and tourism

It is best to come to Solovki from June to the end of September, when navigation is open and there is a possibility to get to the monastery by boat by boat. There are lots of excursions here! For example, from a three-hour survey you can learn about the saints, about the historical events taking place on the islands. With a group of 10 people, the ticket costs 250 rubles.
