In the northern part of the Ladoga Lake there is a rocky island Valaam, known by the ancient Spaso-Preobrazhensky monastery (according to various data built in the 14th century and at the turn of the X-XI centuries, Valaam Island is unique in its weather conditions (for example, 35 sunny days more than on the "mainland") and a special flora, many rare representatives of which are cultivated by monks.In 1965 the island received the status of a natural reserve.
