The mosque in St. Petersburg is "cathedral" and "cathedral", it is one of the largest in Europe and the most northerly in the world. Located on the Petrograd side, near Troitskaya Square, almost immediately behind the mansion of Matilda Kshesinskaya.
Up to five thousand believers can simultaneously offer prayers to Allah .As is the case in all traditional Islamic temples on the ground floor - a hall for the prayers of men, on the second floor women are praying .The mosque in St. Petersburg also performs an enlightening function: on the third floor there are classes of Sunday school, where lessons of Arabic and Tatar languages are taught and necessarily - the fundamentals of Islam .The dome of the mosque turns blue turquoise even on a cloudy day, bringing bright colors into such a calm Petersburg landscape and almost identical to the famous Samarkand mosque Gur-Emir .The interior of the mosque fully corresponds to the traditions and requirements of Islam - the walls are decorated with ornamental paintings, in which there are no animal images .
The mosque was opened in 1913, but still about 7 years after - the interior decoration works continued. It was only since 1920 that services began to be performed regularly here. Under the Soviet regime in 1940, the mosque was closed, like most religious buildings and temples at that time and in the building a warehouse was built, and only in 1956 the mosque was returned to the Muslims.
