From the history of the Yaroslavl church architecture
Church of Yaroslavl for centuries brought to the study The arrival of visitors was a source of pride for the townspeople. On their construction, traded merchants never spared money, the work was carried out according to the highest standard, and the best architects, masons and icon painters were involved in the construction.
For many centuries Yaroslavl temples were mostly wooden. The oldest stone church, preserved on Yaroslavl land, is the Transfiguration Cathedral in the Museum-Reserve. Its long history dates back to the beginning of the 16th century
Stone churches began to be massively erected in the second half of the 17th century, the reason for this was a severe fire, as a result of which almost the whole city burned out .In Yaroslavl, the golden age of church architecture has come. . Here and there new stone churches with massive five-headed churches, ornate decorated with decorative elements, grow . Each of these churches invariably showed local flavor and original Yaroslavl character . Church interiors were decorated with priceless in beauty and skill they were not equal in any other Russian province .
To our great regret, not all the church pearls of Yaroslavl have reached our time, many of them were lost during the whaling Ardean uprising in 1918 ., and most of it was destroyed in the 1930s . In particular, in 1937 the city lost the Uspensky Cathedral (today, in its place stands the more monumental Assumption Cathedral, "recreated" to the millennial anniversary of the city) . The Red Square used to be called Semyonovskaya in honor of the church of Simeon Stolpnik, which was located behind the back of the modern monument to Lenin, but was demolished in 1933 . Church of Peter and Paul on the Volga coast suffered in the uprising of 1918 ., in 1922 g . was completely restored, but after 15 years too demolished . And such bitter pages in the history of Yaroslavl dozens . .@
