History
The monastery was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon, becoming his favorite child - it was here he lived more than eight years after his removal from Moscow . In his history, the monastery experienced different periods: the rise in the Patriarch's being and oblivion after his exile, the restoration of construction at the end XVII century and the great fire of 1726 . The monastery reached its heyday by the end of the XIX century, but with the advent of Soviet power it was closed . During the Great Patriotic War the New Jerusalem m fell into the zone of fierce fighting and was almost completely destroyed . Since the middle of the last century, restoration work was carried out, and in 1994 the Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery resumed its activities .
How to get there
By train from Riga Station (or from metro stations along the train - Dmitrovskaya, Voikovskaya, Tushinskaya) to Istra station and then by bus to the stop "Museum", or to the Novo-Ierusalimskaya station, from where it will be necessary to walk (about 20 minutes) to the right of the tracks on the train.

Ensemble of the New Jerusalem Monastery
By structure the Resurrection Cathedral almost exactly reproduces the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. But its exterior and interior decoration is completely different: the tiled decoration of the temple is unique.
From the east to the cathedral adjoins the underground church of Constantine and Helena. Originally raised from the west, the bell tower was destroyed in 1941 and has never been restored. On the territory are also the chambers of the princess Tatiana Mikhailovna and various outbuildings.
The monastery is surrounded by a fortress wall, built according to all the rules of combat architecture of the late XVII century. Behind the wall is Skeet, where Patriarch Nikon lived, and the Museum of Wooden Architecture: a mill, a chapel and a village hut.

Excursions
A sightseeing tour of the monastery territory includes a visit to the Underground Church, the tomb of Patriarch Nikon and the chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. In the expanded version, a visit to the park of the museum and the farmstead is added.
Duration - 2-2, 5 hours. Cost: adults - 300 rubles, students - 210 rubles (340 and 240 rubles respectively, for an extended version of the excursion).
Peasant childhood is an exciting excursion for children visiting a peasant house and a courtyard with a story about the customs, games and everyday life of peasant families of the late XIX century. The cost for schoolchildren - 130 rubles (all prices are for July 2011 for a group of 15 people).
Working hours of the museum: Every day from 10.00 to 17.00 (in the summer from 10.00 to 18.00), except Monday and the last Friday of the month.
