Priozersk is one of the most ancient Russian cities with unusually rich and interesting stories, which is part of various states, but always faithful to Russia. This is an incredibly beautiful city, where an ancient fortress, churches with small chapels, a grand Lutheran church, laid out of a large gray stone, were preserved. And all this architectural wealth is surrounded by a magical nature with dense forests, picturesque rivers and, of course, the unsurpassed Lake Ladoga.

A bit of history
Officially, the first settlement arose here about eight centuries ago. And already in the beginning of the 14th century the Novgorod princes founded a fortress called Korela. Originally it was built on the island, but later the water was gone, and there was a cape.
Being in the extreme north-west point of the state on one of the branches of the most important trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks", Korela had a huge strategic importance, and many sought to establish here their dominance .So in the middle of the 16th century Korela among other Novgorod lands became part of the Moscow state, then the already prosperous city began to develop at an even faster pace .Here, temples, several monasteries were laid, stone buildings began to be erected .The city turned into the center of cultural, spiritual and economic life of the entire Karelian county .
But in 1617 the city as a reward for helping to prevent the "Troubles" passes under the almost century-old Swedish government and gets a new name - Kexholm. During this time, the fortress acquired new buildings, in particular a round gate tower, which has survived to the present day. Although in the 16th century the Swedes managed to conquer the city, however, their domination was short-lived, but even then they managed to reconstruct it to a large extent.
Already at the beginning of the 18th century the Kexholm fortress again passed to the Russian Empire, with the end of the Northern War it loses its strategic importance and turns into a prison where mostly people who were sentenced for political convictions served their punishment. Here even the members of the family of Emelian Pugachev were in exile. In the eighties of the 19th century, works began to restore the architectural ensemble of the fortress, which ended in 1894, when it was reorganized into a museum.
After the revolution of 1917, Keksholm was transferred to Finland, which had just gained independence, and was given a new name - Kyakisalmi. For more than twenty years of staying in this state the city has turned into one of the developed industrial centers, the "Waldhof" cellulose processing plant, which has become one of the main life-supporting enterprises of the city, and is working successfully today, stands out.
In 1940 the city was annexed to the USSR, and in 1948 - renamed to Priozersk.

Attractions and excursions in Priozersk
Today, Priozersk attracts tourists with its unique nature and limitless opportunities for active recreation, it is possible to engage in sports mountaineering, swim in the rivers, or simply make walks in the picturesque surroundings .Fans of cognitive recreation here will also find a lot of interesting .This is, first of all, the Kexholm fortress, which in the second half of the last century experienced the last of several large-scale restorations .An ancient basement, in which gunpowder, once a rich city arsenal, an impregnable tower was stored, all this appears almost in its original form and contains a lot of interesting things .
Crane with a stone in the paw, depicted on the lower part of the ancient coat of arms of Priozersk, is directly related to the city fortress. According to local belief, when these birds flew from wintering, they had to stop overnight over the swamps of Karelia. And while the flock was asleep, one of the cranes stood in patrol, holding a stone in the paw, when he accidentally fell asleep, the stone fell, woke another bird, and now she was stepping on the watch. In the same way, the Keksholm fortress has always been on guard at the north-western borders of Russia.
Also in the vicinity of the city, on one of the islands of Ladoga Lake there is the Konevsky Christmas-Bogorodichny monastery, its unique architecture and style give an occasion to compare it with the legendary Valaam monastery. In the city itself is attracted by the monumental building of the Lutheran Church, erected in the 30s of the last century.
