The Genoese fortress Cembalo towers above the Balaklava bay since 1357, and to this day looks majestic. Cembalo occupies most of the Serf Mountain (in Greek, Castron), which has the form of an irregular quadrangle. The fortress has 3 defensive walls, and from the sea - impregnable precipice.

It is supposed that the fortress was erected on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification. All the fortifications are made up of local rubble stone in the lime mortar - the construction is so reliable that the devastating earthquake of 1927 did not inflict virtually no damage to the fortress. It was the worst hit in the times of the Great Patriotic War.

Genoa fortress Cembalo - decoration of Balaklava, it from its height reminds this part of Sevastopol about its historical past, that more than 600 years ago, Ali Genoese and erected fortifications. You can see it from the more distant part of Balaklava, adjacent to the Embankment named after Nazukin, and from the sea, if you swim from Balaklava towards the Golden and Silver beaches. Quite good photos of the fortress are obtained from the opposite side of the Balaklava bay, I mean the region ... Read full review
