Balaklava George Monastery is located in the west Heracleian peninsula between Cape Fiolent and Marble beam directly at the cliff top terrace of the Black Sea coast. Documented the monastery was first mentioned in 1578, although according to the legend of its bases are already in 891, when it was founded by Greek sailors, shipwrecked at the coast of the Crimea.

Legend has it that the surviving sailors climbed up on the rock, and on its top have found the icon of St. George. Carrying her ashore, they in a rocky cliff staged the first cave church, which later became the foundation of the monastery. To celebrate the millennium, archaeological research was conducted here at the end of the 19th century, and the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built in the place of the found cave temple, the altar of which remained in the cave.

In 1783 the Crimean peninsula was annexed to the Russian Empire, and the monastery moved to the Russian Empire leading the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, which gave him an important mission to prepare hieromonks for the Black Sea Fleet.

Many famous personalities were buried here: Prince A. N. Golitsyn, General I. O. Witt, Isaev AE Karneev, the participant in the defense of Sevastopol, Vice-Admiral NM Sokovkin and others. In the early 19th century, the monastery visited Pushkin, Griboyedov, here come the kings and eminent travelers
