A bit of history

In 1979, Kotor was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most successfully preserved medieval towns of the Adriatic coast. In the memory of many tourists who have visited here, Kotor remained not only as a comfortable resort, but also as a picturesque old town with narrow streets, ancient cathedrals and red roofs. The architectural ensemble of the city was formed from the 12th to the 20th century, each of the historical periods of Kotor left something of its own in its diverse and stunningly interesting architecture.

How to get to Kotor

The most convenient way to get to Kotor is, perhaps, air: Tivat airport is just 7 km away from here .Highways E65 and E80 are modern, it is easy to get to any of the hotels of Kohta, each of which traditional Montenegrin hospitality will make for tourists a warm, cozy home, whatever the period of stay in the city .And the hotels here are for every taste: both fashionable modern hotels, and authentic hotels in old buildings, and colorful apartments in the nearby villages .It may seem strange, but they all have an equally high rating among tourists .

From Budva (on the way 40-60 minutes, the fare is about 3 euros) and other resorts on the coast to Kotor, there are quite comfortable buses. The bus station is 5 minutes walk from the old town.

Beaches and events Kotor

Attracts tourists and the mild climate of this region .Usually, the interest of tourists in Montenegro is, among other things, the beaches with which the Adriatic coast is famous .But in Kotor there are no well-groomed beaches, except for a few urban ones, and the sea here is not as clean as in other parts of the country .But there is Kotor what attracts a lot of people to it: the city is the site of many traditional musical, theatrical, spectacular festivals such as the KotorART arts festival, Kotorsky festival of children's theater, international flight carnival .

In addition to them, the city constantly hosts theatrical processions and bright, memorable carnivals, which attract a lot of people. And folklore festivals in Kotor have long ceased to be national, so many representatives of different countries participate in them, which otherwise can not be called international.

In addition, many restaurants and outside the walls of the old city.

And in the souvenir shop Catarro, which is located in the Sea Gate of the fortress wall, you can buy a tourist voucher and book accommodation in the nearby Croatian city of Dubrovnik, a trip there will give an opportunity to compare the two countries.

Entertainment, excursions and sightseeing Kotor

Here, narrow streets, Romanesque and Byzantine architecture: the Catholic Cathedral of St. Tryphon, the Church of St. Luke of the 12th century, the clock tower and the fortress of the 13th century, which occupied the foot of the Lovchen Mountain.

The fortress walls of Kotor completely surround the old town, coming out of the sea and rising to a height of 250 m to the mountain, to the fortress of St. Ivan. Some of these walls existed during the Byzantine period of the city's life, but mostly they were built in the 16-18 centuries. This fortification is unique, there are no analogues anywhere in the world.

Very interesting for tourists and the Cathedral of St. Tryphon - one of the most ancient monuments of Roman architecture on the whole Adriatic coast .He was illuminated in 1166 in the presence of the Byzantine governor and other important persons .For many centuries the cathedral stood, many times it was destroyed by cannonballs and earthquakes .He suffered particularly badly from the earthquake of 1667: both of his bell towers were destroyed .In their place in the 17th century Baroque style new .Unfortunately, this temple, like the entire ancient city of Kotor, suffered greatly from the earthquake in 1979 .But to this day are kept in the temple, in the ark, studded with silver, the relics of Saint Tryphon, the wonderworker and patron of the city of Kotor .In addition, the richly decorated sacristy has many artistic values, among which a special place is occupied by the ancient two-meter crucifix, the gift of the Serbian Queen Helena .

Beauty Kotor
Together with the Church of St. Luke, the Church of St. Anne, the Church of St. Mary, the Duke's Palace, the Napoleon Theater, St. Trifon's Cathedral creates a unique, unforgettable atmosphere in the city. The city market is also interesting, where you can buy everything that the surrounding land is rich in: fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, olives - however, it's simply impossible to list all.

Higher up the shore of the bay is the town of Perast. Once it was a powerful stronghold of navigation in general and piracy in particular, but in the early 17th century an earthquake left half the city under water. You can admire it now only with scuba-diving or by going to the only local hotel - there are old plans of the city. Twelve churches of different eras recall the former glory.

The oldest town in the bay is Risan. From the once conquered Romans there remained the ruins of a patrician villa with a luxurious floor mosaic of 1-2 centuries.

Entertainment: climbing the mountain of San Giovanni, boat trips, water polo games and chess (in Kotor strong schools!). In addition, there is one of the best nightclubs in the Balkans - Maximus - highly recommended! Photos of Kotor (11)
