Thanks to the 300-year rule of the Ottoman Empire, many architectural monuments appeared in the Old Bar: the stone aqueduct, the clock tower and the mosque of Omerbashich. A bit of history
At the very beginning of the Bronze Age, people settled on the Adriatic coast. Later, the settlement was called Antibarium - in opposition to Bari, the city that was opposite it on the Apennine peninsula. The Slavs who came here have shortened the name to Bar, the name has survived to this day. Today, the Bar has become one of the centers of beach (and not only beach) recreation in the wonderful country of Montenegro.
How to get here

Old Bar
In fact, the old Bar is a real open-air museum. The city was founded in the 11th century, at the foot of Mount Rumia, at an altitude of 110 m above sea level, and gradually "moved" towards the sea. The old medieval city was abandoned, but not destroyed: in the city remained the remains of 240 buildings for various purposes, curves, narrow streets, irregular shape of the square. The oldest of them - the city gates - belong to the 10th century.
The ruins of St. George's Cathedral, built in the 11th century, were not so well preserved that you could imagine how the cathedral looked originally, but the Omerbashic mosque with the minaret and the pilgrimage premises (everything was built in the 17th century) remained very good. @
Well preserved aqueduct, descending from the mountain to the sea, left from the Turks. The main attraction of the Bar is the palace of King Nikola, more precisely, the whole palace complex, consisting of large and small palaces, winter and botanical gardens. Nowadays the local history museum of the city is located here and various exhibitions are organized.
As in most cities in Montenegro, the Bar closely intertwined with the motifs typical of the Ottoman architecture, with the features of the European - a consequence of the turbulent history.
New Bar
The new Bar is located at the very edge of the sea and is a modern resort town, embodying the Embankment on 13 July and the streets adjacent to it .The main attraction of the New Bar is the church of St. Nicholas, which is the residence of the Catholic archbishop, and the most interesting monument to the liberators of Bar from the Ottoman yoke: his composition includes fragments of the destroyed buildings of the old Bar .The beach in the Bar area is bordered by pine and cypress forests, thanks to which the air here is made easy and fragrant .
The neighborhood of Bar
The sights and surroundings of the city are rich, there are numerous monasteries, ruins of old churches, ruins of fortresses .Separate attention deserves the Benedictine Monastery of the Mother of God Ratachskaya between Bar and Sutomore .It was founded in the 13th century, and was destroyed by the Turks in 16 ...
