Answering information department of "Tourism Subtlety"
Tokyo officially has the status of not the city, but the capital district. It includes about 62 independent cities, towns and even a few small islets. According to the data of June 2010, the total population of the Okrug is 13 051 965 people, located on the territory of 2187.65 square kilometers.
But more often than not, when talking about the capital of Japan, there are only 23 special areas (this is a special administrative status) or municipalities . It was they who, from 1889 to 1943, were a separate settlement under the name of Tokyo, now form the center of the modern eponymous district.
The population of special districts, in fact, the capital city, is 8 742 995 people. They are located on the territory of 621.9 square kilometers with a density of 14.061 people per square kilometer
