Whimsically stretched on the hills, Perugia captivates with its strict beauty and versatility. Narrow, winding streets lead to specially designed areas, from where a breathtaking panorama of the valley of the Tiber River opens. Built many centuries ago, Perugia is astonishingly young today: a multinational, bright "stream" of students who came to study Italian at Universita 'per Stranieri and visitors from all over the world, day and night, "boils" in its quarters.

The Tourist Office is located at Piazza Matteotti, 18.

There is a well-developed network of bus routes in the city, there is also a mini-metro - on a route only 3 km long (from the railway station to the historic center) there is a small, automated train without a driver. The cost of a ticket for both modes is € 1 when you buy at a tobacco stall and € 1, 5 for a driver.

You can buy a subscription for 10 trips - it will be even cheaper.

The historical center of Perugia is located on the highest hill of the city. You can get there on foot, on the mini-metro or on special public elevators that rise from car parks.

You can visit the surrounding area and the nearest cities by intercity bus (depart from the station to Piazza Partigiani) or by train (the main railway station is on Piazzale Vittorio Veneto 4). The current schedule of buses and trains, as well as the fare you can find from the monthly booklet Viva Perugia, which can be bought for € 1 in the tourist center, hotels, and in some stalls.

For those who prefer to travel by their own transport, the main car rental stations of Perugia are car rental offices: Hertz, Avis and Maggiore. In the historical center of Perugia, restrictions are imposed on the movement of vehicles. A fine is provided for violation.

Kitchen and restaurants

Despite the fact that the cuisine of Umbria is provocatively simple, its dishes will not leave indifferent even the most demanding gourmets. The secret lies in the excellent quality of ingredients: olive oil (one of the best in Italy), pasta, vegetables, pork and lamb, spicy herbs and, of course, black truffles.

Try the traditional recipes in the restaurant La Taverna, (Via delle Streghe 8) or in Trattoria Del Borgo (Via della Sposa 23). A good restaurant Dal mi Cocco on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 12 offers a three course meal for € 13 (a bottle of wine € 5). In Pizzeria Mediterranea (address: Piazza Piccinino 11/12) bake delicious pizza at a reasonable price (€ 5-10). Pizzeria Mediterranea - a place very popular not to stand in line, it is better to come to the opening (opening hours: 13.00 to 16.00 and from 19.00 to 23.00).

In the cafe Gambrinus on Via Bonazzi, despite the "Czech beer" name, a large selection of delicious ice cream.

Shopping and shopping

On Tuesdays, from 8.00 am to noon, Piazza Danti operates a market with a large selection of fresh products. On the last Sunday of the month in the summer on Palazzo della Prefettura, and in the winter on Rocca Paolina the fair of ceramics and jewelry opens. In the city there are several large shopping centers: La Rinascente, Coin, Upim.

In addition, Perugia is famous for its chocolate factory "Bachi" (Bacci), blue boxes with fragrant products are sold throughout the city. Despite the fact that the factory is "under the nose", the cost of stunning candies is not affected at all. But the very fact of acquiring Bachi in Perugia, and not somewhere in Italian duty free, deserves to spend 5-10 EUR on the amazing tile of a bitter or dairy miracle.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Perugia

Perugia - a very ancient city, the first mention of it is found in the documents of the 4th century BC. e. - under the name of Perusia, he was a member of the state of Etruria. Since the time of the Etruscans, fragments of walls with gates (also known as Porta Augusta), a chamber tomb and an Etruscan well have been preserved, a grand structure that served as a reservoir (located on Piazza Danti).

In the National Museum of Archeology of Umbria on Piazza Giordano Bruno, 10 the largest collection of objects of life and art of this ancient people is collected. Opening hours: from 8.30 to 7.30.

It is convenient to purchase Perugia Citta Muzeo, which entitles you to visit several museums:
  • The "A" card (€ 10) for an adult, the entrance to 5 museums, is valid for 48 hours after the first visit. There is also a "U" card (€ 6) for students.
  • The "C1" card (€ 20) entitles you to visit all museums, the "C2" card (€ 35) - "family" (up to 4 people). Valid for 1 year.
The card can be bought at any museum and some hotels.

Fountain of Maggiore in the main square (Piazza IV Novembre) - for several centuries the architectural and structural center of the city. Created by medieval sculptors Nicolo and Giovanni Pisano, it is also the most famous landmark of Perugia. Here is also the palace of Pallazzo dei Priori, built in the 13th century. At present, its vaults are co-located:

  • Collegio del Cambio is the residence of the Guild of Bankers, built in the 15th century and painted by Perugino.
  • Collegio della Mercanzia - residence of the Trade Guild.

Opening hours: from 9 to 12.30 and from 2.30 to 17.30 (from March to October) and from 9.00 to 14.00, all days except Monday (November to February).

Galleria Nazionale dell 'Umbria is the national art gallery of Umbria, which includes the works of Duccio, Perugino, Piero della Francesca. Opening hours: daily, from 8.30 to 19.30. On the first Monday of every month, the gallery is closed.

Opposite the palace stands the monumental Cathedral of San Lorenzo, whose construction was completed in the late 15th century. It is curious that on the steps leading to the gallery and cathedral, by the evening there is nowhere to fall an apple: local people here communicate, eat, sing, play musical instruments.

Rocca Paolina - remains of a fortification wall erected in 1540 after the enslavement of Perugia in the course of the so-called "Salt War." The most interesting part of the fortress is located underground, the entrance to it leads from the underground parking lot to Piazza Partigiani.

Over Pallazzo del Governo, from the Carducci terraced gardens, located on the ruins of the fortress, a magnificent view opens up.

In Perugia, there is a very beautiful botanical garden, located at Borgo XX Giugno, 74.
