The history of Anzio
Antium is much older than Rome. Before the conquest in 338 BC. e. it was a fortified city of the Wolski tribe
At the time of the Empire, Ancium competed with Pompeii for the number of luxurious villas and wealthy Romans. At the seashore stood the imperial palace, in which Caligula and Nero were born. During the excavation of the palace, such masterpieces of ancient art as "The Borgean wrestler" and "Apollo Belvedere" were discovered. And in 59, Nero laid the commercial port here
After the capture by the Saracens the city was abandoned, and the settlement itself moved to the east - to the area of modern Nettuno. Pope Innocent XII in 1698 began construction of a new port east of the archaeological zone. During the Second World War, the Allies landed in the Anzio area to liberate Rome. Then the city was badly destroyed and after the war was rebuilt.
Infrastructure
Today this small residential town consists of two parts. The first is the center and a small seaport, and the second part of Anzio provides a tourist area with restaurants, bars, pubs, discos, nightclubs. Tourists can find absolutely everything here: clean sea and sandy beaches, golf courses and tennis courts, diving courses, canoeing and windsurfing.
Beaches
The 12 km long beach area stretches from Villa Nero to Pine Villa (Villa dei Pini).
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Anzio
The city of Anzio even in ancient times had a developed infrastructure: the city had thermae, amphitheaters and circuses. Remains of some Roman buildings can still be seen to this day. In addition, Anzio has memorial sites dedicated to World War II
This is a Sicilian-Roman-American cemetery and a 77-acre Memorial, where almost eight thousand American soldiers are buried. Most of them died for the freedom of Sicily, as well as for landing in Salerno, on the Anzio coast and for the expansion of the bridgehead of military operations. The military memorial is to the north of Nettuno, in the eastern part of Anzio. At the other Commonwealth military cemetery, the remains of a thousand soldiers are buried in the coastal military cemetery, 5 km north of Anzio (SS207) - more than two thousand.
The Anzio Military Museum (Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio) is dedicated to the landing of the Allies on the territory of the port of Anzio and is located in the village of the 17th century - Villa Adele, which is down the hill from the railway station. The entrance is free. By the way, the museum is in the same building as the Archaeological Museum, which is also recommended to visit.
