Entertainment, sightseeing and sightseeing Vibo-Valentia
Visiting the historic center of the city is better to begin with the impressive Norman castle built in 1070 by Roger I of Normann, and later extended by order of Friedrich II .After the earthquake of the 18th century, the castle was used as a prison, and since 1969 it houses an exposition of the National Archaeological Museum, where the most valuable exhibits were found during the excavations of Hipponion and other cities in the province of Vibo-Valentia .The collection of the museum is represented by four main sections dedicated to the finds from the sanctuaries, necropolises, private collections and exhibits of the Roman period .
The main religious structure of the city is the Cathedral of San Leoluca (Duomo di San Leoluca), to which adjoins the so-called Valentianum (Valentianum), the former female Dominican monastery. The cathedral, located in Piazza San Leoluca, built on the ruins of the Byzantine basilica of the 9th century and destroyed during the earthquake, was rebuilt in 1783 under the leadership of Emanuele Paparo. In the cathedral, decorated with baroque stucco, the 18th-century marble altar and a triptych featuring Madonna delle Grazie by Antonello Gagini, a sculptor of the Renaissance, were preserved.
The original structure of the monastery of Valentinian goes back to 1455, in 1543 it was restored by order of Ettore Pignatelli, who gave the building to the Dominican monks Tommaso Gerace and Vincenzo Sgro. Until 1852, the monastery was used as a military hospital, and until 1944, as an orphanage. Since 1988, the monastery has an exposition of the Museum of Sacral Art, represented by significant works of art. Opposite the cathedral is the entrance to Villa Communale, a beautiful public garden.
Palazzo Cordopatri, built in 1784 by Antonio Cordopatri, on the ruins of an older building, was destroyed during the 1783 earthquake. The palace, located on the street of the same name in the heart of Vibo-Valentia, is now in a sorry state, especially its central part - missing parts and cracks appearing on the outer and inner sides of the walls.
Other attractions include the Palazzo Gagliardi, the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, the Palazzo Marzano, the Chiesa di San Michele and the church of San Giuseppe. Chiesa di San Giuseppe).
