Agrigento is a small medieval town that, in itself, deserves attention, but completely fades next to the nearby Valley of Temples (Valle dei Templi), the most important ancient Greek ruins in Sicily.

In the daytime, the ruins are usually teeming with tourists, so it's worth arriving early in the morning or closing down - in order to avoid crowds.

Modern Agrigento is one of the most living and aggressive cities in Sicily. It is here, as is known, many infamous families of the Mafia have found shelter.

Ancient Agrigento
3 things to do in Agrigento
  1. Once in Agrigento in February, it's mandatory to go to the Valley of the temples, even if you are not a big fan of antiquity. It is this month that hundreds of almond trees blossomed from all over Italy. No impressionist even dreamed of such a collection of white and pink shades.
  2. In all the rest of the year, anyway, go to the Valley of the Temples, at least for the sake of looking into the spiral wine of Spizzulio (Via Panoramica Valle dei Templi, 23). And try an amazing pasta with dried tomatoes for a glass or a different wine.
  3. Having fallen in love with the local cuisine (one does it here for sure), go 30 km from Agrigento to the estate of Mandranova. There to buy a bottle of olive oil with you, and then under the supervision of the mistress of Sylvia to pass three-hour cooking courses. If desired, you can also stay at night, having bathed in the pool (it is filled with water from mineral springs).

Entertainment, sightseeing and sightseeing Agrigento

Here are the unique temples of Juno-Lacinia and Concordia with the adjacent early Christian catacombs, the ruins of the temples of Zeus, Hephaestus and Hercules, the sanctuary of Asclepius, the cave Doellian temple near the Sanctuary of Demeter and the Church of San Nicola.

Most of Agrigento itself is quite modern, but the city can still boast a fair amount of medieval buildings, especially the cathedral and the church of Santa Maria dei-Grechi. There is also an excellent Archaeological Museum with an exposition of items found in the excavations of the ancient city. Photos of Agrigento (19)
