From the pompous grandeur of Rome, as in the mirror reflected in the pompous cathedral of Aquileia, to the imperial atmosphere of the Habsburgs in the famous cafes of Trieste - this border region confuses and presents a whole gamut of contradictory but ecstatic feelings. And this is the whole of Italy, is not it?

Friuli Venezia Giulia - once completely independent regions, compelled by circumstances to unite, have a rare individuality. In Friuli - practically everything from Venice and later Austria, the local even speak their own language (Friuli or furlan). Moving east, you start to notice more and more Slavic, which is no wonder - in the neighborhoods of Venice-Giulia there is Slovenia.

Kitchen and restaurants

Local cuisine was born by the joint efforts of Austrian, Venetian and Slavic traditions, absorbing much of the traditional Friuli recipes. First of all the region became famous for its white wine, one of the best is the legendary Pinot Grigio. In total, there are eight zones in the region where the best wines are produced (D.O.C.G.), they also include the red Ramandolo and Picolit, as well as the excellent variety with the unpronounceable name Tazzelenghe.

Sea cuisine is also popular here: crostacei e conchiglie (crayfish and shellfish), boreto from Grado, scampi a la busara from Istria, sardoni from Trieste and ribaltavapori from the Marano lagoon. And yet the ham from San Daniele - a worthy competitor of Parma ham - is considered to be a kind of "visiting card" of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Also it is worth trying local cheeses and other dishes: for example, frico (roasted cheese), brovade (sausages with turnips), cjarsòns (ravioli with sweet floral herbaceous spices) from Garnia, gnocchi di susine from Gorizia.

Gourmets will certainly enjoy themselves on the farm market in San Daniel, where you can not only taste all of the above, but also buy refined smoked trout, fragrant honey, apples, grappa, olive oil and desserts in the "Slavic" style - gubana and presnitz. @

Do not forget to try:

Famous ham varieties: San Daniele, Cormons, Sauris, Carso.
Cheese according to ancient recipes: Montasio, Latteria, Liptauer, Malga, Tabor, Zepek, Asino.
White wines: Ramandolo, Picolit, Istriana, Friulano, Malvasia, Vitovska.
Red wines: Schiopettino, Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso, Terrano.

Beer: Castello di Udine, Befed, Agribeer of Sauris, Praforte.

In addition, gastronomic routes pass through the region: "The road of wine and cherries", "The road of Terrano wine", "The road of ham and castles" and "The road of Montasio cheese". Details specify in the tour of the region.

The nature of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region

Beach resorts

Grado, connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land, is distinguished by a magnificent historical center in the Venetian style, where the ancient mansions of nobles and nobles alternate with small colorful houses of fishermen.

Lignano Sabbiadoro is an oasis of peace and relaxation, where there is everything that is necessary for recreation and entertainment, as well as 8 km of luxurious golden coast and tranquil sea.

Ski resorts

Forni di Sopra (Forni di Sopra) is framed by the picturesque peaks of the eastern Friul Dolomites and is located in the heart of the sunny valley in the national park. Piancavallo - another solar valley near Pordenone can offer all kinds of entertainment for those who like to relax in the air.

Ravascletto is one of the largest villages in the Valcalda valley, which is also considered the highest mountain (950 m). Sella-Neva (Sella Nevea), nestled between Mount Kanin and Montasil offers fabulous landscapes and lots of snow. And finally, Tarvisio is a paradise for lovers of winter sports and summer trekking.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Despite its "frustration", the area Friuli-Venezia Giulia can compete with any central region of Italy in terms of the number of beauties and attractions. Here, almost every town can boast of a unique museum collection or an ancient chapel. For example, Aquileia and its cathedral, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Or the historical centers of the cities of Udine, San Daniele, Tolmezzo, Gorizia, Pardenone, Cividale del Friuli and finally the attractions of the stunning regional capital - Trieste.

In addition, the province is famous for its picturesque villages located near the Alpine foothills. It is worth to visit the damn charming Cusatorte (road A23), the therapeutic resort of Art-Terme (S52bis), or even better - do not regret the time and ride along the S52 mountain road. Dinner at any restaurant from these villages will be a thousand times more delicious than the most expensive restaurant in Trieste or Venice. Photos of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (28)
