Crete is famous for its ancient monasteries, which store priceless Christian relics. Among the most popular are the monasteries of Priveli, Toplou and Kerr.

Monastery of Grace, founded in 16th century by Abbot Privel, is located 37 km from Rethymno. The monastery, consisting of two parts, only one of which is open to visitors, and is known for its ancient icons.

The monastery of Toplou, located near the town of Sitia, was erected by the Turks on the ruins of an older monastery supposedly built during the Venetian period in honor of God Mother and John the Theologian. In the church at the monastery there are unique icons and frescoes

Kerr Monastery was built in the beginning of the 14th century in honor of Our Lady of Kera - it was one of the most important centers of Christianity in Greece. The monastery is popular among pilgrims who seek to see or touch the miraculous icon of the Mother of God.
