Entertainment, excursions and attractions in Rethymno
The city itself leaves a very specific impression .Many houses built in Venetian style have typically Venetian ornaments: openwork window grilles, cast metal door handles and - typically Turkish wooden balconies, picturesquely hanging over the street .Initially, these balconies were much larger, but in the beginning of the 20th century they were started to be cleaned, so that it was possible to organize a full-fledged traffic movement .Then in Rethymno stood Russian troops, and the head of the Russian corps Colonel Shostak was the governor of the city .It was during this period that Rethymno began turning from a dingy provincial town to a civilized European .It was under the Russian governor that a sewage system was created in the city, bridges and roads were built, historical buildings were restored, schools and hospitals were opened .With the help of Nicholas II, a hospital was built that bears his name .Today in this building the Police Academy works .
The city embankment is also good. It is a real decoration of Rethymnon, although it is inferior to the elegance of the quay in Chania. There are many restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and shops on the waterfront.
Fortress
The fortress of Rethymno is the largest shore fortification ever built by the Venetian Republic. The main purpose of the construction of such a powerful fortress was the raids of pirates, which periodically devastated the entire city.

And the store itself is very interesting. It is located in the building of the Venetian Loggia. In the old days there was something like a club for the nobility. After capturing the city, the Turks attached (as usual) to the building a minaret, giving it the Ottoman flavor.
The Maritime Museum and the Historical Ethnographic Museum are also interesting. Their exhibits will help to be imbued with the old way of life of the townspeople. In the Old Town you can admire the port and the old lighthouse, which is still performing its functions properly.
The Monastery of Arkadi
The monastery in some way can be called a national shrine: in 1866 monks, besieged by the Turks, blew up the powder storehouse - together with themselves and the invaders. In addition to the memorial, beyond the walls of the monastery, stands a beautiful church (16th century), a museum in memory of defenders of the Orthodox faith and a shop with handmade textiles.
The monastery is in the mountains 23 km from Rethymnon. Three times a day there is a bus from the city.
