Wismar stands on the shores of the Baltic Sea in the territory of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city is small in size, its area is slightly more than 40 square meters. km, and lives in it slightly less than 45 thousand people. The exact date of education is unknown, and the consonance of its name to the Slavic languages compels specialists to make various assumptions about when and how the city was founded. But it is reliably known that the city from 1257 to 1358 served as a residence for the princes of Mecklenburg.

A bit of history

At the end of the 13th century Wismar, together with Rostock and Lübeck, founded the Hanseatic League, which undoubtedly indicates a high level of economic development of the city and its political power .70 meetings were held here, determining in what direction the Union will develop in the future .But gradually the Hansa began to lose its former power and authority, and with the discovery of America and the subsequent shift of the main trade routes to the west, ceased to exist .The city of Wismar fell into decay, and later, in the 17th century, after the Peace of Westphalia, went to Sweden .Sweden refused its rights to this city only in 1903 .

Like many cities in which there were military factories, Wismar suffered greatly during the Second World War: the Dornier air companies were located here, and they were bombed.

Despite extensive destruction during the Second World War, Wismar was carefully restored and its historic center in 2002 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Wismar

As in most old German cities, the central square here was the Market Square. The present architectural ensemble is organic and rather peculiar, which makes the area very well recognizable. In the center of the square is an unusual structure - a 12-faceted low tower in the style of the Dutch Renaissance. This is a pavilion for water distribution, it was built in 1602, and 16 public buildings and 220 residential buildings were supplied with water from here. The structure is more functional than decorative, but the area, however, decorated itself.

A building of burnt bricks, which is known in the city as the "Old Swede", rushes into the eyes. It was built in 1380, and its name was received in 1878, a hotel with such an unusual but expressive name was opened in it.

The Church of the Virgin Mary is no less unusual in its kind, once belonged to a number of the largest churches, built in the style of brick Gothic. During the Second World War, the church was almost completely destroyed, but its ruins were completely removed only by 1960.

To restore did not become, therefore now it is possible to see only 81-meter tower on which 9 bells and ancient chimes are established which four times a day execute one of twenty chorals.
Wismar ... yesterday and today ...)

Another church stands on the Market Square, the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built on the model of the Church of the Virgin Mary. Surprisingly beautiful lay-out of the interior of this temple, which highlights the high, 37 meters, vaulted ceiling. The neoclassical style of the Town Hall building, which was built in 1819, is now an art gallery. It remains to be surprised how it turns out that all these heterogeneous structures built in different centuries make up such an agreeable ensemble.

The port in Wismar

Wismar is known and as a port .In those days when the city was on the territory of the German Democratic Republic, its harbor was one of the most well-equipped in the country .From here they brought potash fertilizers to all countries of the socialist community .The history of the Wismar Shipyard is interesting .It was built only after the Second World War, and the decision to build was adopted because it was a very convenient harbor and there was no shortage of highly skilled specialists previously employed at the Dornier plants .

A lot of ships were built for this shipyard for the Soviet Union, in addition, the ships formerly belonging to fascist Germany were reconstructed here.

After the unification of Germany, the shipyard had a very difficult period, but now its revival began. The young Russian entrepreneur Vitaly Yusufov in 2010 became its owner and CEO, after which the largest in Europe, the slipway again received orders.
