Berlin is a city with a rich cultural heritage, with incredible architecture, museums, theaters, galleries, but for many tourists it is primarily associated with the notorious Berlin Wall. The concrete fence height of more than three meters, surrounded by barbed wire, a length of one hundred and sixty kilometers, was not just a border between two parts of the German state, it shared thousands of families for almost thirty years overnight.
The Berlin Wall was erected in the late summer of 1961 , and it fell only in the autumn of 1989, during this time, when trying to cross it, about seventy-five thousand people were detained and convicted, and more than a thousand were shot on the spot, including even children. In November 1989, Germans from eastern Berlin were allowed to cross the border in the presence of special visas, but people did not wait to receive them and forcefully stormed the wall, behind which they were joyfully welcomed by the inhabitants of Germany.
This was an event of a global scale, about the reunification of families, the city and the whole state were spoken in all corners of the planet. In a matter of days, there was no stone left on the wall, its fragments, which West Berlin artists decorated with eloquent graffiti, were sold for considerable money in private collections. The interest of tourists to this unique historical object has not abated so far. Many people come to Berlin just to see with their own eyes at least its ruins, but even the Berliners themselves can not say with certainty where exactly it was. Therefore, today the initiative group with the support of a special EU fund is engaged in the restoration of fragments of the Berlin Wall, trying to use the same building materials and achieving the maximum historical conformity.
So, for example, an almost eight hundred-meter section of the wall along the Bernauer Strasse was reconstructed here people often tried to cross the border illegally, and their lives ended tragically. When rebuilding the walls, the same plates were used, of which it consisted initially, it was necessary to buy them from private collectors around the world at a price of one thousand EUR for each fragment. The full picture is provided by three sentinel towers, which numbered more than three hundred before the beginning of the 90.
Today these unique objects arouse great tourist interest, and are also a symbol of freedom, unity and invincibility of people who once lived in complete isolation
