In the Middle Ages Toulouse was one of the richest cities in France, blue sky-blue color of the wahoo paint dye . Monopoly came to naught after the Portuguese began exporting indigo to Europe . In the inheritance from this dye industry of Toulouse were elegant mansions, more than 50 hotels and manors of enterprising and wealthy residents of the city .
@@ Over the past 20 years, Toulouse has become the main center for aviation and space flights in France. More than 35,000 local residents (out of 400,000) work in the space industry, and Airbus is considered the largest employer in the whole region.

Shopping and Markets
Once in Toulouse on Sunday, it's worth to visit flea market, which opens early in the morning at the Basilica of Saint-Sernin (Saint Sernin). Make a high-quality or refined purchase here is unlikely to succeed, but to buy a funny vintage souvenir, and just spend half an hour wandering along the rows with stuffed junk trays - it's easy. Another flea market opens its doors every first weekend at Grand Rond
Fans of organic products and home-made wine will enjoy the farm market around St Aubin Basilic, which also opens every Sunday morning and runs around lunchtime. Fresh vegetables and fruits can be bought on the Vicenza until noon on Boulevard de Strasbourg (cheap and tasty).
Interesting second-hand shops can be found on Rue Gambetta. This street is in the center of the so-called "artistic quarter" of the city, dominated by the School of Fine Arts ('Ecole des Beaux Arts'). Here and around Place de la Bourse there are lots of shops with art, antiques and textiles - the historical craft of Toulouse.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions in Toulouse
The main attractions of the historic city center are the churches of Saint-Georges and Saint-Sernin, the Capitol and the pink facade of the large town hall. Other attractions: narrow streets of old quarters, built up by rich mansions, botanical gardens and the neo-Mavritanian pavilion of the Georges Labit Museum (an excellent collection of Egyptian and Oriental art).
Noteworthy is the cathedral of Saint-Etienne, which was laid in 1073 in the style of South French Gothic, but its construction was completed only after many centuries. In addition, Toulouse is notable for civil architecture of the 16th-17th centuries. Particularly impressive are the magnificent facades of the multi-storey mansions of the dye dealers - that same blue waida. Some of them were designed by the master of the Renaissance Nicolas Bachelier, in particular the Assise palace (now the Bamberg Foundation and the Flower Games Academy)
The main square of Toulouse is named after the Capitol located on it - the town hall of the mid-18th century. In the center there is a giant Oxitan cross

Previously, the place of the basilica is occupied by the late-entomological temple, which was laid by the first bishop of Toulouse, Saint Saturninus. Together with other pilgrimage churches, Saint-Sernin is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1218, a stone was thrown from the roof of the basilica, killing the leader of the Crusaders, Simon de Montfort
