History and culture
Dijon was founded in the Roman Empire, around the 6th century BC. e. After the Capetians came to power, the dynasty of French kings, the city becomes a major trading center and the capital of the dukes of Burgundy.
However, the offensive of the "golden age" is connected with another royal dynasty - the house of Valois, three of whose representatives were born in Dijon: John Fearless, Philip Good and Karl Dare . The economic and cultural flowering can be easily explained: it was during this period that the rulers concentrated power over a large part of the territories of north-eastern France, western Germany, Belle and the Netherlands . The Dukes were the great patrons of art, science, education, and from the 14th to the 15th centuries, the best painters, sculptors, architects of their time created in Dijon making the city the center of European culture .
At the end of the 15th century Dijon was losing its capital status, becoming a province. Subsequently, part of the former glory returns to Louis XIV. One of the creators of Versailles, the most famous architectural masterpiece of the "sun-king" era, Jules Arduin-Mansar even rebuilds the walls of the Palais des Ducs.
Since the 19th century, there has been an active construction of railways. From that moment, one can speak of Dijon as a major railway junction in France and a city with a developed industry. Today the capital of Burgundy is a rare example of how the dignity of modern life is combined with the medieval color of a carefully kept history.
