The intersection of the Alpine roads, comfortably located in the valley and securely protected from all sides by mountain ranges - is Chambéry, the capital of the south-eastern French department of the Savoy of the Rhône-Alpes region .In Chambery from the first minute you feel so at home, and that pulls out of the hotel in slippers .Even elephants in the famous local fountain with elephants seem to be very reluctant to look out of their niches .There are no high-profile attractions attracting noisy crowds of tourists, but there are many narrow streets, squares and fountains that have a contemplative pastime .

Shopping and shopping

From Chambery it is necessary to bring a rather unusual souvenir - an easy, but very strong and sharp knife of the local factory Opinel will serve you faithfully for many years. Savoy knives are considered in France about the same unshakable symbol of quality, like our Tula samovars or Gusev crystal.

Food markets with a variety of fresh farm products are arranged on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the morning on the Place du Palais de Justice. After lunch on Saturday, the place is given over to the sellers of clothing.

Flea markets, where you can buy any old and modern stuff of varying degrees of value, are held on the second Saturday of each month on the Place Saint-Léger and the Place de l'Hotel de Ville and on Sundays around the Chamnord Shopping Center.

Twice a year, on the last weekend of April and September, the largest in the Rhône-Alpes region, the flea market Grande Braderie ("Big sale") is held in the central streets of Chambery.

From edible souvenirs, it is worth buying local wines (for example, Le Vermouth de Chambéry, Le Chambéry Frais, Le Bonal), cheeses, traditional sweets and pastries of the Savoy region.

Cuisine and restaurants of Chambery

In Chambéry, there are many restaurants of any level: from brasserie and numerous Italian pizzerias to gourmet establishments. Due to the fact that Chambéry is historically connected with Italy, there are many restaurants that follow the Italian gastronomic traditions. At the L'Hypotenuse restaurant, you can listen to live music from lunch to Thursday at lunchtime, skip a glass of juice ... or drink coffee with a croissant at the non-alcoholic bar Le Passage

Entertainment, excursions and attractions

In the medieval quarter of the historic center of Chambery, there are many well-preserved streets and avenues. The most famous among them is the 13th-century rue Basse de Chateau. A full list of deserving streets can be found at the Chambery Tourism Office at 5 bis, place Palais de Justice.

Among the historical monuments are the Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, a building that has been rebuilt many times, with an abundance of medieval towers, passages and courtyards. Here is the largest bell ensemble in France - 70 bells of different sizes and tones.

On the first and third Saturdays of every month at 17:30, bell concerts are held in the castle.

The theater of Charles Dylan (Le Theater of Charles Dulin) was built in Italian style and was nicknamed "miniature La Scala". Pay attention to the magnificent painted curtain depicting the descent of Orpheus to hell (the work of the famous master Luigi Vacca).

The cathedral of Saint-Francois de Salle, erected in the 15th century by Franciscan monks, keeps several outstanding masterpieces: a diptych on biblical themes made of ivory, a magnificent collection of medieval frescoes and an impressive organ (concerts are held every Sunday at 17:30 from July to September).

The Place du Palais de Justice is a wonderful open space in the Italian style, where it is so nice to rest after sightseeing. Do not forget the Saturday markets!

And, of course, do not ignore the most beautiful view of Chambéry - the Fountain with elephants, which is an arched structure, of which four elephant torsos look like a very exotic sight!

Also worth a visit is the Baroque church of Notre-Dame (17th century) and visit three local museums: the Jean-Jacques Rousseau house in the town of Charmet, the Museum of the Savoy region and the Museum of Fine Arts. Photo Chambery (7)
