In 2004, Estonia entered the European Union, signed the Schengen Agreement on May 1 of the same year, and on December 21, 2007, border control was abolished. But with all this, the country retained its own national currency, the Estonian kroon. It (the international code EEK) consisted of 100 sents (sent) and was circulated in 1928-1941, and also from 1992 to 2010.

Since January 1, 2011, the official currency of Estonia was EUR (Euro in Estonian, International letter code EUR, sign €). The transition from the kroon to EUR began in advance, as early as December 1, 2010. The first 2 weeks after the introduction of the new currency were settled by old banknotes, and already on January 14, 2011 EUR became the only payment facility in the country.
