Stare Mesto, or Old Town - district of Prague, where a huge number of attractions, and it is here the first thing sent to every tourist who arrived on a visit to the capital of the Czech Republic . The settlement in this place arose in the X century . The building of the Old City changed with the change of epochs: the Gothic houses were replaced by the Renaissance mansions, those in turn were replaced by baroque palaces . Today's Old Town hides under its pavement earlier building of heights in a second floor: a basement, a cellar and a maze of ancient streets .

Attractions and Museums

Municipal House (1905-1911) - a magnificent example of Art Nouveau in Prague, built on the ruins of the Royal Court. Above the portal is the mosaic "Worship Prague" and the coat of arms of Prague, the Hall of the Burgomaster was painted by A. Mukha with images on national themes, and the main hall is named after the famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. All this clearly indicates that the house was built at a time when all the attention of the society was riveted to the national culture and history. An independent Czechoslovak Republic was proclaimed here on October 28, 1918.

The Powder Gate, preserved near the Public House, was built from the 15th to the 16th century. In the XVIII century. in the tower a gunpowder was built - hence the name. The current view of the tower is the result of the restoration of 1886. Now the tower houses the historical exposition (April-Sept 10.00-18.00, Oct.-March 10.00-17.00)

Wonderful photo and video sketches of Prague

Staromestske nam.) - the main square of the Old Town. From the eastern side of it stands the Gothic temple of the Virgin Mary in front of Tyn with two pointed towers (1339-1511). The interior of the church is decorated with murals made in the XVIII century by the court painter K. Shkreta. In the cathedral are buried the heads of those 12 noblemen who were executed for participation in the Battle of Belaya Gora and hung for public viewing on the Charles Bridge. Entrance to the temple from the area - under the arcades of City Hall

-. The main building on the square . In the Middle Ages the town hall was the center of political life in Prague . After the May uprising May 8, 1945 g . survived only a tower and a small fragment adjacent to her house on the tower . arranged a viewing platform (entrance through the tourist office in April . - October 9 . . . 00-18 00 Nov . - March 9 . 00 -17 00 .) . On the south wall Hall installed very interesting astronomical Orloj . chimes every hour on top of the open windows and clock them "tested" 12 apostles . Friend e figures also come into motion . A crowd of tourists gathers to see this, and the whole picture looks very funny .

The monument to Jan Hus (1915) in the northern part of the square was set for the 500th anniversary of the preacher's death and became one of the symbols of the independent Czech Republic.

The Church of St. James was founded by Vaclav I in 1232, and at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries. rebuilt in the Baroque style. The interior of the church is luxurious: there are 21 altars, the remains of noble noblemen have found rest in richly decorated sarcophagi, and the local organ is the largest and oldest in the Czech Republic. Do not be frightened when you see a dried up human hand suspended on a hook at the entrance to the temple - this is the hand of a thief, whom the Virgin Mary herself tried to rob.

Video from the streets of the Stare Mesto district

One of the most crooked streets of Prague - Karlova - leads from the Small Square to the Charles Bridge. On such touristy pedestrian streets in Prague it is pleasant to get lost and just wander from restaurant to pub, from beer garden to souvenir shop, and after leaving the store, again to go to the cafe.

In the Old Town there are interesting museums: the Museum of Czech Cubism, Smetana Museum, Historical and Cultural Museum of Napřastek, Kafka Museum. By the way, do not take the sign "Fly, a museum" on a building near the Old Town Square. The Mucha Museum is located in the Nove Mesto district, and here it's just a bait for tourists to sell reproductions.

The streets of the Old Town - the medieval spirit of Prague April 14, 2014

In whatever place of Prague you are not there, your legs will lead you to the heart of Prague - Staré Město. Only here you can really feel the spirit of the medieval city. Of course the most important places to visit are the Old Town Square and the Orloi Clock, where the tourists gather most. But it's best to turn from tourist trampled paths to narrow side streets. There it is not difficult to get lost, but this is the beauty of traveling through the Old Place. The streets are very narrow and crowded, there are ... Read full review

Christmas 2014 I met in the majestic and most romantic city in the world - Prague. Here at every step there are amazing and interesting sights, so to get acquainted with the city should be allocated at least 10 days. I came to Prague right after the New Year, so I managed to visit the famous Christmas sales on the Old Town and Wenceslas Square, where for 5-10 euros you can find interesting souvenirs, high-quality neckerchiefs, toys, etc. Of course, the heart ... The true face of the most beautiful European city December 02, 2013

You can not say that you saw Prague, if you have not visited the Old place. This is the most tourist, the most beautiful, the oldest - and indeed just the very center of Prague. In fact, it is not such a large area, but to inspect it carefully, not missing a single pearl of architecture, not a single highlight hidden behind crowds of travelers, it will take even more than one day. Opens the gate in the Old Town Powder Tower - inside, if you believe the brochure, there is nothing particularly remarkable, but the sight of it all ... Read the whole review

Old Town - Old Prague area November 11, 2013

Prague is a fairy-tale city, and every area of the historical part must be given attention. Old place - this is also a solid sight, because in the Middle Ages there was the center of the city, and the Czechs respect the old times and almost do not rebuild.
Take at least the Tyn Church or an astronomical clock - without them, no one tour does. I liked Orlow's watch right away, and crowds of tourists did not irritate, but added joys. Back at home I saw a cartoon legend telling talented and faithful ... Read the whole review
